Geek shows and movies on UK TV in the coming week

28 October 2010 1:57 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Stephen K Amos, Wallace and Gromit, Armstrong and Miller, Brimstone and the Psychoville Halloween Special. Plus great movies too in the coming week on UK TV!

This week, naturally, it's all about the scares and there are plenty of films and shows to provide the shivers for Halloween and the next seven days or so.

But the scheduling genies have also managed to squeeze in the laughs among the shrieks this week, for those too squeamish for the scream-inducing telly treats.

We start off with a newcomer to the eponymously named stand-up comedian sketch show club with The Stephen K Amos Show airing tonight, Friday, October 29th at 10:00pm on BBC2. There's plenty of room for series of this sort and we look forward, with a warm welcome, to Mr Amos' particular brand of funny stuff.

Carrie Fisher talks about her upcoming special ‘Wishful Drinking’

10 August 2010 6:21 PM, PDT | | See recent news »

By Greg Hernandez Carrie Fisher delighted us on the final day of the TV Critics Association Summer Press Tour on Saturday where she came to talk up the upcoming HBO special “Wishful Drinking.”

It’s a documentary of her successful stage show that has wowed audiences from coast-to-coast, most recently on Broadway. Wishful includes elements from a June 25 performance of the show at the South Orange Performing Arts Center in South Orange, N.J. The HBO show also will feature archival footage and interviews with friends and family.

And what a family: Mother: Debbie Reynolds. Father: Eddie Fisher. Former stepmothers: Elizabeth Taylor and Connie Stevens. Half-sister: Joely Fisher. Ex-husband #1: Paul Simon.

Carrie’s singer father famously left her movie star mother, the star of Singing in the Rain, Tammy the Bachelor and many other films, for Miss Taylor in the late 50s. It was a situation »

Geek shows and movies on UK TV in the coming week

20 May 2010 9:01 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

The Ashes To Ashes finale, Nick Frost in Money, and loads of great films to watch: it's this week's UK TV week round-up...

Hardly any of what follows this paragraph matters much to most of us, does it? Because tonight, Friday, May 21st at 9:00pm, the final, last ever episode of Ashes To Ashes will be shown on BBC1. We'll have our cry - we mean review - as the credits roll, provided, of course, the Internet can stand the weight of the many Ashes fans clambering to commiserate over the end of a much loved and fascinating series as well as claim cred for theories proven right and share in a laugh at the farthest fetched.

While we're still in mourning mode, Doctor Who will try to soothe us with the first of a two-part episode, The Hungry Earth, on BBC1 at 6:15, Saturday, May 22nd.

Red Dead Redemption Achievements & Trophies Revealed

30 March 2010 8:42 AM, PDT | GameRant | See recent GameRant news »

Rockstar released the trophy/achievement list for their upcoming and highly anticipated (especially by me) game Red Dead Redemption.

Though this doesn’t really tell us anything new about the game it does show that there will be a very deep stat tracking system that Rockstar is famous for in their GTA series. Oh and you will be lassoing bandits off horses – though I don’t believe that will count towards “Clemency Pays.”

Here’s the full list:

Austin Overpowered

Complete Twin Rocks, Pike’s Basin, and Gaptooth Breach Hideouts in Single Player.

Bearly Legal

Kill and skin 18 grizzly bears.

Buckin’ Awesome

Break the Kentucky Saddler, the American Standardbred, and the Hungarian Half-bred.

Get 250 headshots in any game mode.

Clemency Pays

Capture a bounty alive.

Evil Spirits

Complete Tumbeweed and Tesoro Azul Hideouts in Single Player.

Exquisite Taste

Purchase a rare weapon from a gunsmith.

Blu-ray Review: Lola Montes (Criterion Collection)

16 February 2010 12:49 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

My experience with Lola Montes director Max Ophuls was zero prior to my first screening of Criterion's new Blu-ray edition of his final directorial feature. As a result, while watching the special features and listening to the fascinating audio commentary included, I realized the work of Ophuls cannot be judged by watching one film. It's also my impression he's a director whose signature will be found on most all of his films, leading me to believe the more of his films I see, the more I will appreciate what I am watching. While I enjoyed Lola Montes, and noticed plenty of directorial control as well as an obvious auteur style, I still felt I was missing something.

In September of 2008, Criterion released The Earrings of Madame de..., La ronde and Le plaisir on DVD, three of Ophuls most recognized films with The Earrings of Madame de... probably being his most loved. »
