At last, Pierre Étaix's classic clowning returns to the big screen

The celebrated 'French Buster Keaton' has finally won his battle over distribution rights to get his films shown again

Pierre Étaix is back, by popular demand. Jerry Lewis acclaimed him as a genius and Terry Gilliam is a devoted fan, but until very recently, the 83-year-old Étaix, a comedian, magician and clown who Paris-Match called "the French Buster Keaton", was in danger of being forgotten entirely. His films are timeless treasures of whimsical, physical comedy, but copyright difficulties meant that his movies had not been distributed, let alone released on home video, for decades. Étaix's signature on a disastrous distribution contract cast his films into oblivion, but 56,000 more, including those of Jean-Luc Godard, David Lynch and Woody Allen, on a petition in 2009, have rescued them for posterity. The end to this long-running legal dispute should be a cause for celebration among film fans, even though many, quite understandably, will never »

A Comic Master Gets His Due

20 November 2011 11:57 PM, PST | Leonard Maltin's Movie Crazy | See recent Leonard Maltin's Movie Crazy news »

Imagine stepping into a time machine and listening to Charlie Chaplin or Buster Keaton discuss their films. Last week, hundreds of people had the privilege of sharing an evening with a living master of screen comedy, 82-year-old Pierre Étaix, at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Many of them had never seen his work before, but they came away fans and converts. I was delighted to host the evening, which included his Academy Award-winning 1962 short 'Happy Anniversary' and the 1969 feature 'Le Grand Amour'/'The Great Love'.   The spry octogenarian charmed his audience (with the help of Geneviève Bujold, who served as interpreter)...

So I hope you enjoy today’s installment and the comfort of knowing that you’re now officially my longest relationship ever. Woo!!… I think.

'Pac-Man & Galaga Dimensions' Review - One Power Pellet Too Many

28 July 2011 2:20 PM, PDT | MTV Multiplayer | See recent MTV Multiplayer news »

Outside of Nintendo, Namco may be the longest running video game company that still regularly supports the original games that put them on the map. At least once a year gamers are treated to remakes or rereleases featuring the likes of coin-op classics like "Dig Dug" or "Rally-x." However, for their latest 3Ds rereleases, Namco dipped into two of their most famous wells with "Pac-Man & Galaga Dimensions," for a dual-headlining compilation.

The Basics

Collecting different versions of two of Namco's most time-tested franchises, "Pac-Man & Galaga Dimensions" features six unique games, three based on each title. The original old school classics "Pac-Man" and "Galaga" are both here, with some slight 3D upgrades, as well as their modern-day classic counterparts "Championship Edition" and "Legions." In addition to those four, already released games, "Dimensions" also features two new titles, "Pac-Man Tilt" and "Galaga 3D Impact" each of which take advantage of some of the 3Ds' new tech, »

20 Years Ago: Terminator 2: Judgment Day Exploded Into Theaters

He came back. On July 3, 1991, Terminator 2: Judgment Day arrived in theaters as naked as Arnold Schwarzenegger after time travel and came away with the then-biggest five-day opening in box office history. The James Cameron-directed film earned $54 million over its first five days of release, $3 million more than Tim Burton's Batman grabbed in its first five days back in 1989. Said an anonymous theater owner to the New York Times at the time, "At virtually all our locations, we were selling out well in advance of showings, and the word-of-mouth buzz out there is just phenomenal." Indeed it was: Terminator 2 went on to gross $204.8 million domestically, and over $500 million worldwide. All of which is to say: Happy anniversary to a cultural touchstone! »

'American Idol' Recap: Haley Reinhart's Sun Also Rises

5 May 2011 5:53 AM, PDT | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

Wednesday night, the "American Idol" atmosphere was "electric" thanks to regal Oscar winners, Jacob Lusk crotch grabs and James Durbin's armpits. The producers had a fool-proof script banged out for our "enjoyment," which included the phrases "in it to win it," and "finding your perfect song." And the night's guest mentor told MSNBC back in 2007 that "['Idol'] undermines art in every way and promotes commercialism, I am sad people love it so."

In other words, this is "American Idol X: Abandon Hope All Ye Who Enter Here."

The theme was "Now & Then" which meant the contestants had two performances to rehearse. One was a current song (or in the case of Haley's to-be-released "Born This Way" deep cut, a future song) and round two was all about songs from the '60s. (Or, um, the '70s, if your name rhymes with Tames Surbin.)

Doctor Who complete reviews: Silver Nemesis

4 April 2011 3:15 AM, PDT | Shadowlocked | See recent Shadowlocked news »

These Doctor Who stories are flashing before my eyes at a fair old pace. It seems like only yesterday that I was reviewing 20th anniversary tale The Five Doctors. Now it's the turn of 25th anniversary story Silver Nemesis. Given the lightning speed passing of time, it'll probably seem like days before I'll be sitting before a 50th anniversary special. Given the Gold anniversary, it'll probably be set on the planet of Voga, as an army of Axons do battle with the natives and The Doctor – presumably to the strains of the dreary Spandau Ballet dirge, which always sounds to me like an elephant's got stuck halfway down a water slide at a swimming pool for yuppies.

Too bad then that Silver Nemesis doesn't quite live up to the high expectations of being the official 25th anniversary story. Don't get me wrong, it's reasonably entertaining fare, but there's a whole host of problems lurking around. »
