The ship's name "SS LUR-HELENE" is a take-off on the SS LURLINE, the name given to a series of Matson line steam ships which serviced the San Francisco - Los Angeles - Honolulu sea route from the 1930's to 1970.
The parrot, Mr. Tristan, is named for a character in "Mutiny on the Bounty."
Mel Blanc would bring his many vocal caricatures to the TV series "The Flintstones," where he would voice stone age tropical birds in much the same manner as the parrot here.
The captain's voice and caricature is based on Charles Laughton's portrayal of William Bligh in Mutiny on the Bounty (1935).
