Becoming Bond SXSW Review: Essential Viewing for 007 Fans

15 March 2017 12:03 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

James Bond is one of the most enduring characters in the history of cinema. Ever since Sean Connery first brought the spy we all know and love to life on the big screen in Dr. No, there have been six men who have taken on the role and tried to fill those shoes. But one and only one man was brave enough to only play Bond once. That man was Lazenby, George Lazenby and Becoming Bond is his story. For fans of James Bond, or fans of interesting stories in general, this documentary is absolutely essential viewing.

Hulu's Becoming Bond tells the story of George Lazenby and how he, a poor mechanic turned car salesman who then became a male model, landed the role of James Bond. A man who never acted a day in his life prior to that. The story is told by George Lazenby himself in the »

Sean Connery played James Bond five times, from Dr. No through You Only Live Twice, before abandoning the role. He would eventually be coaxed back for Diamonds Are Forever. Coming to a Casino Near You: James Bond Slot Machines

8 March 2017 9:15 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The owners of the James Bond franchise have made a multi-year licensing deal with gambling products specialist Scientific Games Corp., which will lead to the super-spy’s image being used on casino slot machines.

The exclusive agreement was announced Wednesday between Scientific Games with Eon Productions Limited, Danjaq LLC and MGM Interactive, a subsidiary of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The deal gives Scientific Games the rights to leverage all past and future James Bond films, as well as the film’s talent portraying James Bond.

Scientific Games said it expects to showcase the first James Bond-themed slot games at the Global Gaming Expo on Oct. 3-5 in Las Vegas. That means the first machines could begin appearing in casinos next year.

Created in 1953 by novelist Ian Fleming, Bond was a frequent patron of high-end casinos in the books and two dozen films that followed — including two versions of “Casino Royale.”

‘Moonlight’ is the Most Frugal Best Picture Ever: See Analysis of the 10 Lowest-Budget Winners of all Time

1 March 2017 8:00 AM, PST | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

With a budget of $1.5 million, 2017 Best Picture winner “Moonlight” cost less than a 30-second ad during the Oscars (reported price: $2.2 million). And, among the category’s 89 winners, it stands as the lowest-budgeted film in the Academy Awards’ history.

To determine the 10 least expensive Best Picture winners, we looked back at each year, researched reported budgets, and then calculated them at 2017 dollar values. Although independent films have dominated the Oscars for the last decade, the only indie to make the cut from that period was “Crash.” Nor did Woody Allen’s “Annie Hall,” or some black-and-white studio classics like “Casablanca” or “The Lost Weekend.”

The 10 straddle almost every decade of the Oscars and come from either independent producers or smaller distributors (four of the 10 were released by United Artists).

For comparison, the most expensive film to win remains “Titanic;” its adjusted budget was $300 million more than “Moonlight.” That total dwarfs the »

Nicolas Winding Refn’s Yakuza Action Feature ‘The Avenging Silence’ Gets Extensive Synopsis

11 January 2017 1:34 PM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

With The Neon Demon now (almost completely) exorcised from Danish auteur Nicolas Winding Refn‘s system, he is already deep into preparing his next project. On the docket for the director is The Avenging Silence, which will apparently sate Refn’s desire to make a “big extravagant action film.” Refn also said over the summer it is loosely inspired by “Dr. No,” Ian Fleming‘s classic Bond novel, as well as William Burrough‘s “Nova Express.” An extended synopsis has now been released for the feature, which hopefully will make its way to screens by 2018.

While he has dipped into action in sections of DriveBronson and The Pusher Trilogy, The Avenging Silence sounds like a big step for Refn into pure spy/action genre fare. However, fans of Refn’s stylistic choices should rest assured as he has already stated his protagonist won’t say much. This time, that »
