"American Idol" winner Phillip Phillips told Jay Leno Thursday night (May 24) that he had slept only a couple hours following Wednesday's finale, but he didn't look much worse for the long night and day. The fact that he got to meet Rihanna probably didn't hurt.
Phillips made a post-victory appearance on "The Tonight Show" Thursday and talked about his win, a brief encounter with Rihanna at the finale and his health issues. He suffered from chronic kidney stones throughout the season and will have surgery for the problem.
"It's been tough," he says in the second clip below. "... You've got to go after your dream [when] you know you want it bad enough. I've had a lot of great doctors and people around me who helped get me through."
Phillips says he's planning to have surgery in the next couple weeks and expects to be ready for the start of the "American Idol" tour in July. »

Whether it was by an android or a corporate shill, the crews of Alien and Aliens found themselves pawns in the hands of the Weyland-Yutani corporation and their pursuit of an alien life form. Since director Ridley Scott's Prometheus is set in the same universe as Alien (perhaps a prequel — vote's not in yet), the presence of both Charlize Theron as Weyland Corporation employee Meredith Vickers, and Michael Fassbender as Weyland's latest android David seemed to imply that the crew of the Prometheus were going to be doubly-screwed by Weyland Industries. However, a recently released featurette suggested that Theron's Vickers might actually be working in the crew's best interest, even if she seems to lack a favorable amount of social skills.
In the latest clip from Prometheus, which aired on an episode of The Tonight Show where Theron was a guest, sees Vickers confront David in a hallway and »

Attention, everyone: you can stop feeling sorry for Conan O'Brien, because he's stopped feeling sorry for himself. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, O'Brien revealed he's finally made his transformation into a mature role model and surprisingly tall butterfly. Though the loss of The Tonight Show temporarily left O'Brien an angry, resentful wearer of neck beards, he's not interested in talking smack about Jay Leno. He wouldn't take the bait during his appearance on Letterman and he's not going to now. The odds are we will both leave this Earth without speaking to each other, which is fine... there's really nothing to say. We both know the deal. He knows; I know. I'd rather just forget. After the 2010 Tonight Show controversy, things were looking a little bleak for O'Brien, but he's since emerged stronger than ever, [...] »

The comic’s become a cable industry icon since he moved from NBC to TBS, and he assured execs this morning that they have nothing to fear as new technologies and social media change the rules of engagement with TV viewers. “I was forced to embrace this world” after he lost his Tonight Show gig in 2010, he said this morning at The Cable Show. He discovered that unlike the old days, where the goal was simply to drive people to the tube, getting audiences “emotionally involved” has become just as important. For example, O’Brien says it doesn’t hurt ratings to release clips and other information ahead of a broadcast. When Will Ferrell recently appeared on Conan in character as Ron Burgundy to reveal his plan to make a sequel of The Anchorman, “we chipped his appearance out into bite-sized pieces and put it out everywhere.” That resulted in higher ratings for the night. »

Jessica Simpson has her hands full with baby Maxwell these days, but that won't stop her and Eric Johnson from moving forward with their upcoming wedding plans.
According to Life & Style, the couple, who have been engaged since November 2010, were originally planning a November 11, 2011 wedding (11/11/11) but decided to wait until after the birth of their darling daughter, Maxwell Drew Johnson.
Now, L&S reports, Simpson and Johnson are set to tie the knot on December 12, 2012 (12/12/12).
While there has been no official word from the star about her new wedding plans -- we're still waiting to see a photo of baby Maxwell, too -- she did speak about her nuptials while promoting "Fashion Star" earlier this year.
"I want [Johnson] to be my husband so bad, and I do still want to wear the pretty gown and everything, and I have to wait until after the baby," Simpson told Jay Leno on "The Tonight Show" in March. »

Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" is the pop culture gift that keeps on giving. Even President Barack Obama and presidential candidate Mitt Romney are hopping on the "Call Me Maybe" train. Well, not really, but ... maybe? (Sorry.)
Thanks to some clever video editing, the two politicians performed the viral song in a similar fashion as some Harvard athletes did earlier this month. The end result -- which premiered on "The Tonight Show" -- was pretty magical.
The "Call Me Maybe" craze started in February, when Justin Bieber and his girlfriend Selena Gomez, together with a few of their famous friends, recorded an adorable lip sync video to Jepsen's infectious pop song. Thanks to Bieber -- and his 21 million Beliebers -- "Call Me Maybe" became an overnight internet sensation.
Popstar Katy Perry caught the "Call Me Maybe" bug and uploaded her own parody, featuring herself and a group of friends at a Coachella poolside party. »

So this is crazy.
President Barack Obama and presidential hopeful Mitt Romney teamed for a cover of Carly Rae Jepsen's ever-catchy tune "Call Me Maybe." The video is meant to parody the covers performed by Smu women's rowing team and the Harvard baseball team.
Well, Ok, so the candidates didn't actually participate in the digitally enhanced spoof, but the folks at "The Tonight Show" pieced together the clip, which, at the very least, threatens to upstage the work by the college sports teams.
After all, can anything rival two middle-aged politicians in suits crisscrossing their arms and legs to the beat of a tween pop hit? We didn't think so.
Still, we can only imagine what Sasha and Malia would think.
Although starring in a parody of "Call Me Maybe" may be beyond the scope of Obama's official duties, the president has taken time to reveal his comedic side by »

On May 22, 1992, Johnny Carson ended his 30-year reign as the host of "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson." Twenty years after his final broadcast, Carson remains unmatched as an American television icon.
Carson's abilities as a television host set the prototype for all late-night hosts who would come after him. Effortlessly likable, quick on his feet and always present, his monologue and guest interviews were a staple of the American cultural diet. In the new PBS documentary "Johnny Carson: King of Late Night," his one-time permanent guest host Joan Rivers called Carson "the ultimate straight man," praising his ability to let his guests have the spotlight during interviews.
One of his successors, Conan O'Brien, said in the documentary that his forebear's greatest slight of hand was to simultaneously appear innocent as well as "the coolest guy in the room."

Bob Newhart says his many guest-hosting stints for Johnny Carson could have led him down a different television path.
The veteran comedian and star of two classic sitcoms was a frequent substitute when Carson had time off from NBC's "The Tonight Show," and Newhart -- one of the many Carson friends and peers who appeared in last week's PBS "American Masters" profile of the late-night-tv icon -- believes his 87 rounds in the host's chair might have led to many more.
"I didn't know it at the time, but I think I was being groomed" to take over "Tonight" permanently, the famously mild-mannered Newhart tells Zap2it. "Johnny and NBC were in one of their perennial fights. He was saying he was walking, and they were saying, 'We're not paying him any more! He's holding us hostage. We'll find somebody else.'"
Not that Newhart would have agreed to replace close »

Bobcat Goldthwait is known for being shocking. It isn’t necessarily the things he does, though setting a chair on fire at “The Tonight Show” and directing a film about a girl’s youthful experience with bestiality are pretty shocking themselves. It’s mostly the things he says. It’s also the way he says them, with his signature screechy yelp. Yet the thing about Goldthwait’s humor that sets him apart from your standard borderline-annoying shock jock is the fact that he’s actually clever. He’s not making rather tasteless jokes about Michael Jackson for the sheer pleasure of tearing the late pop star a new one; well, he might be, but he does a much better job doing it than most comedians have, and such a good job that one can’t really be offended. Rather, one laughs in that awkward, slightly disturbed way that signifies really good black comedy. »

Or, why I’ll never be fooled by NBC again.
So, this is the last time that I will speak or write about Awake. In fact, this might be the last time anybody issues any type of missive in regards to NBC’s most recent series cancellation.
To say that I had high hopes for Awake would be an exercise in understatement. I’ve been slathering this show with praise since months before its premiere date was announced. Now I will offer my reasons as to why I fell so hard for the show, and why it fell so hard once it aired.
Who is responsible for Awake‘s failure?
Well, it wasn’t my fault, that’s for goddamn sure. And I’m pretty sure that it isn’t the fault of Kyle Killen, the series’ creator. Killen had a novel concept for a series, which he equipped with a compelling structure. »

Shock was a late bloomer in comedy, launching his career at the age of 40 after stints as (according to his self-penned bio) an "unsuccessful jewel thief," a prisoner, a priest in training, and an inventor with three patents in electronics. His profile got an early boost with an appearance on The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson—the last new comic to be introduced on the show during Carson's tenure—and landed both his »

Thursday night, Conan O'Brien appeared on "The Late Show with David Letterman," and the two late night hosts wasted no time addressing the denim elephant in the room: Jay Leno. In separate incidents over the last two decades, NBC favored Leno over each former "Late Night" host as the star of "The Tonight Show," and they spent a good portion of O'Brien's appearance on the CBS talk show swapping insights about their common ground.
"The longer we sit here, the more uncomfortable it'll make Jay," were the first words out of Dave's mouth after sharing an awkward yet knowing silent moment with Conan.
"You know Jay's watching right now," Conan joked. "He's getting a live feed in a satellite truck right now." Despite prodding from Letterman, Conan would not bring himself to say anything explicit to slam Leno throughout their interview, but did imply that the relationship between the two has been damaged permanently. »
