Was the Moontower Comedy and Oddity Festival, whose inaugural run took place last weekend in Austin, Texas, "important for comedy"? Who knows. Probably. What is clear, though, is that the four-day festival took advantage of the ubiquity stand-up comedy is currently enjoying and ran with it, producing a full-fledged, comedy fan-friendly destination where both established stars and up-and-coming comedians took the stage to inspire laughter. Taking advantage of the Diy media that comedians have fully embraced, Moontower turned podcast listeners and Twitter followers into delirious audience members for one April weekend.
As Dan Solomon of Austin CultureMap rightly pointed out, the festival's bookers succeeded not just in terms of a comedy festival, but for any kind of arts festival. The headliners it attracted -- Seth Meyers, Aziz Ansari, Jeff Ross -- hold cache in the world of comedy that most music fests are lucky to ever get, especially in their first year of existence. »

Comedy Central announced Monday that Don Rickles will receive The Johnny Carson Award For Comedic Excellence at the upcoming 2012 Comedy Awards. Rickles is the second recipient of the honor, after David Letterman received the award at the 2011 ceremony.
At the ceremony, which will be taped in New York City on April 28 and will air on Comedy Central on May 6, "Daily Show" host Jon Stewart is scheduled to present the award to Rickles.
Rickles, 85, has been performing stand-up comedy since the early 1950s. He quickly developed a reputation as an "insult comedian," throwing out razor-sharp barbs at audience members as a trademark of his act. As a result of befriending Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack, he has been a headliner in Las Vegas since he first performed there in 1959.
His first appearance on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" came in 1965, introducing him to a national audience. He went on »

Back in the 1990’s, Arsenio Hall was one of the most beloved late night talk show hosts. Hall’s show, The Arsenio Hall Show, gave The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson, a run for his money as the king of late night, even though Hall never quite achieved the longevity of Johnny Carson.
Although Hall’s late night show has been off the air for eighteen years, many people still recall Hall’s show. Hall, who is currently a contestant on Donald Trump’s Celebrity Apprentice, credits YouTube, among other social media networks, as to why people still remember his late night show.

Exactly 30 years ago tonight, Late Night with David Letterman debuted on NBC.
Letterman had hosted a morning show on the peacock network back in 1980 and it was such disappointment that it was pulled after 18 weeks. The network still believed in Letterman though, especially when he started being courted for a syndicated show. He was signed to guest host for his idol on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and it became clear what Letterman should be doing.
In November 1981, the creation of Late Night with David Letterman was announced, produced by Carson productions. This meant that Tom Snyder's Tomorrow Coast to Coast would be moved back an hour but Snyder refused and that show was cancelled in mid-December.
To accompany Letterman on his new show, musician Paul Shaffer was hired to lead a group named The World's »

David Letterman has outlasted his idol Johnny Carson (29 years, eight months) by celebrating his 30th anniversary in late night television this week. There will be no fanfare or special broadcasts on his show or the CBS network, as Letterman prefers to keep the event quiet and low key. His very first guest ever, Bill Murray, returns for the Tuesday episode this week. Another of his most frequent guests, Howard Stern, will be talking with him Wednesday for the 41st time. On February 1, 1982, "Late Night with David Letterman" debuted on NBC after "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" and aired weeknights for the next 11 years. The irreverent and eccentric host was aiming for a younger more male audience, especially those in college and baby boomers having families and starting jobs. Over the NBC years, Letterman's primary mission seemed to be showcasing people that wouldn't be booked on other shows as well as his increasingly looney st. »
