'Sleeping Beauty': 25 Things You Didn't Know About the Disney Classic

27 January 2014 7:00 AM, PST | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

With anticipation building for Angelina Jolie's "Maleficent," due May 30, it's worth noting that the source of her live-action remake, Disney's animated "Sleeping Beauty," marks its 55th anniversary this week. Released on January 29, 1959, the movie was only a modest hit at the time, but over the years, it earned acclaim for its gorgeous wide-screen visuals, its memorable music, and its unforgettable villainess.

It's a movie you probably watched many times as a child, and yet there are still some things you probably don't know about "Sleeping Beauty," including its connections to Bugs Bunny, "The Andy Griffith Show," and the British royal family.

Here's a list of 25 such items you can stack on your spindle -- but be careful to shield your fingertip.

1. "Sleeping Beauty" is adapted from both the Charles Perrault and Brothers Grimm versions of the classic fairy tale. In Perrault, the princess's name is Aurora; in Grimm, it's Briar Rose. »

“American Idol” Recap: Adorable in Atlanta

24 January 2014 1:22 PM, PST | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

Ugh, can you believe it? American Idol is back to giving us hour-long Thursday episodes. I thought these salad days of two-hour, Ben Hur-like installments would never end, but I was wrong. Scott Savol wrong.

But girl, Harry Connick Jr. still found the time to slay us with one-liners, like an actual adult we’d actually enjoy spending time with. The adult-iness of the rapport at the Idol judges’ table can’t be underestimated. Polite puns. Knowing asides. Incisive commentary on each other’s commentary. Remember, it was only a year ago that Nicki Minaj yelled obscenities while Mariah Carey muttered Mean Girls references at no one. I like Nicki and love Mariah, but that was more painful than any Lazaro Arbos ballad. This season is like a sweet, saucy, fun-loving Allison Iraheta take on “Hot Stuff.” You know I don’t say that about everyone.

Thursday’s Atlanta auditions were solid! »

Sosie Bacon may only be 21, but she has a lot going for her. Alec Baldwin puts TCM's Robert Osborne in the hot seat on 'Private Screenings'

6 January 2014 2:30 PM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Robert Osborne is used to interviewing screen legends, but now he knows how it feels to sit in the other chair.

As Turner Classic Movies begins its 20th-anniversary year, its principal host -- who was an actor before he became a Hollywood columnist and historian -- recounts how his career began and progressed in a new "Private Screenings" special at 8 p.m. Et/5 Pt Monday (Jan. 6). Alec Baldwin, who hosted the Saturday-night TCM film series "The Essentials" with Osborne from 2009 to 2011, asks the questions.

"It never occurred to me," the ever-genial Osborne tells Zap2it of becoming a "Private Screenings" guest. "Way back, Dwayne Hickman [the former star of TV's 'The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis'] said, 'You know, you come into everybody's living room every night, and they don't know you. They like you, but they don't know much about you. Sometime, you should do a documentary about yourself.'

"I think that was even before we had a 'Private Screenings' franchise, »
