Storyline

Premarital sex, secrets, and society. At 17, shy Susan Slade is on her way to California after a ten-year stay at a remote Chilean mine where her father was chief engineer. Onboard ship, she's romanced by Conn White, a handsome mountain climber on his way to Alaska. Home in Monterey, Susan longs to hear from Conn. Two locals also take a shine to her - Hoyt Brecker, a horse wrangler who's the son of a criminal, and Wells Corbett, a sweet guy who lives in his high-society parents' shadow. Jump ahead two years, Susan has a desperate secret that her socially-conscious mother won't let her share. Can Susan find happiness - and what is it really that turns a girl into a woman? Trivia

In the scene where Susan rides her birthday horse, Chulo, for the first time, there was a cameo by champion stud Captain Topper, a Shetland pony born in 1956. He was adjudged the greatest model stallion at the National Congress Pony Show in 1958 and 1959, and won 17 championships and 40 blue ribbons. Captain Topper was purchased for $6000 by Miss Patricia Burton of Detroit, who operated a stud farm on the Monterey peninsula. See more »

One of my favorite movies
21 January 2004 | by (South Korea) – See all my reviews

I also really loved this movie and used to watch it almost every year when I was a young girl. Of course, now it is never shown, and I echo everyone else's sentiments about desiring to purchase the movie if it is ever released on VHS or DVD. I especially would like to see it now that I am an adult, as I am curious if it would affect me the same as it did when I was a child. I remember it was so dramatic and so heartwrenching...particularly the hospital scene at the end of the movie...also the scene when her father has the heart attack. Does anyone know how we could get this movie??
