Storyline

Almost 19-year-old Marius feels himself in a rut in Marseille, his life planned for him by his cafe'-owning father, and he longs for the sea. The night before he is to leave on a 5-year voyage, Fanny, a girl he grew up with, reveals that she is in love with him, and he discovers that he is in love with her. He must choose between an exciting life at sea, and a boring life with the woman he loves. And Fanny must choose between keeping the man she loves, and letting him live the life he seems to want. Trivia

This production of "Fanny" began as a hit Broadway musical in 1954, with the libretto co-authored by Joshua Logan, who also directed the show, which starred Ezio Pinza, in his last stage role before his death, as Cesar, Walter Slezak as Panisse, and Florence Henderson as Fanny. When the musical was filmed, Logan stayed on as director, and the film was faithful to the show, except for the fact that Logan dropped all of the songs and simply used them as background scoring. Goofs

During the opening credits, the captain makes several turns of the wheel which would have caused the ferry to turn while crossing the harbor. The shots through the ferry showing the background and the overhead shot reflect no change in the straight line course. See more »

Quotes

Marius: Me? Why?
Cesar: Now now, Marius. Don't take me for an idiot. I know you love Fanny.
Marius: Who told you?
Cesar: [Sarcastic] My little finger.
Marius: Then that little finger is not so bright.

Enjoyable to be a part of; the music still haunts me.
5 November 2002 | by (California) – See all my reviews

From beginning to end, the shear desperation, miscommunication, and finally sacrifice and joy; this movie was a lesson in the results of selfishness and then the results from self-sacrifice and generosity. The music that threaded through the entire movie has stayed with me until now. I bought this movie at an exhorbitant price, about 15 years ago--and felt that it was worth every penny. It is two hours of enjoyable escape with the family in Marseilles. Every single member of the cast was outstanding in this movie.
