Tashlinesque – The Hollywood Comedies of Frank Tashlin

13 August 2014 1:00 PM, PDT | Trailers from Hell | See recent Trailers from Hell news »

In all of Frank Tashlin’s work, there is nothing quite so boldly staged as the delirious sequence in 1961′s The Ladies Man, in which Jerry Lewis, the film’s director and Tashlin’s nominal pupil, deconstructs a panic attack in twenty five seconds. Framed inside an enormous set that resembles the interior of a gargantuan and painstakingly detailed dollhouse, Lewis’ character, a terrified schlemiel by the name of Herbert H. Heebert, is in the midst of a mad dash up the set’s elaborate staircase when suddenly he’s literally beside himself with fright, splitting into two, then three, then four similarly fearstruck replicants, zig-zagging about the hallways until they all disappear one after another into the safety of their bedroom, the door slamming in quick succesion with four emphatic bangs. No, there was nothing close to this deft and dizzy blend of Psychology 101 and slapstick in Tashlin’s portfolio, »

Warner Home Video Goes Nutty For "The Nutty Professor"; 50th Anniversary Gift Set Released

18 July 2014 11:14 AM, PDT | Cinemaretro.com | See recent CinemaRetro news »

Warner Home Video, in association with Paramount Pictures, is commemorating the 50th anniversary of Jerry Lewis' "The Nutty Professor" with the release of a deluxe Blu-ray gift set. The film is understandably Lewis' personal favorite- and with good reason. His clever comedic take on the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde legend remains a remarkably inventive and funny film, with Lewis not only in the director's chair, but also giving a tour-de-force performance as the nerdy academic who manages to transform himself into a different kind of "monster"- a suave lady's man with a huge ego and no regard for the people in his life. In a personal letter included in the set, Lewis states: "This is a very special film with a lot of heart and soul. I thoroughly enjoyed the writing, directing, acting, editing, scoring and extensive promotion of the film. It is what I always dreamed »

There's Soul in Late Jerry Lewis Films -- and Some Laughs

20 May 2014 9:00 PM, PDT | Village Voice | See recent Village Voice news »

If the mid-career of Jerry Lewis — the post–Dean Martin era, the years of films like The Nutty Professor, The Disorderly Orderly, and The Errand Boy — is often treated as a joke, the actor-director's late career may as well be a bitter punch line. To get a really derisive snort, just mention The Day the Clown Cried, Lewis's 1972 film about a clown in a Nazi concentration camp, which has never seen the light of day. Lewis himself has said, "You will never see it. No one will ever see it, because I am embarrassed at the poor work."

You won't see The Day the Clown Cried when Anthology Film Archives presents "Jerry Lewis: The Completed Retrospective," a gathering of three films directed by Lewis in 1970 and 1980, pictures that »

Blu-ray & DVD Release Date: June 3, 2014

Price: Blu-ray/DVD Combo $54.99

Studio: Warner Home Video

The high-definition debut of Jerry Lewis’ (Rock-a-Bye Baby) classic comedy movie The Nutty Professor is this 50th Anniversary Collector’s Edition.

The beloved 1963 film stars Lewis as shy and bumbling chemistry professor Julius F. Kelp. Unlucky in love, Kelp makes a potion to help him attract his crush, student Stella Purdy (Stella Stevens, The Poseidon Adventure). The potion turns Kelp into smooth nightclub singer Buddy Love, and works beautifully to draw in Stella, but the unstable formula makes Love slip back into Kelp at the most embarassing moments.

The four-disc Nutty Professor 50th Anniversary Collector’s Edition contains the movie on Blu-ray as well as DVD, plus DVDs of two other Lewis films: Cinderfella and The Errand Boy.

Lewis helped compile the plentiful extras for the Collector’s Edition, which include two new items:
