Clue of the Silver Key
Prismark1011 March 2021
A drunken waiter called Tickler hired for a private party thrown for an artist and his fiancée Mary is found shot dead after the party.

Mary's curmudgeonly but wealthy uncle Harvey Lane (Finlay Currie) is also killed later on.

Superintendent Meredith (Bernard Lee) just knows there is a link between the two deaths.

Harvey's butler Binny (Patrick Cargill) wants to help out the police as he always wanted to be a detective.

Like other Edgar Wallace mysteries, there is skullduggery afoot. Harvey Lane was targetted but Tickler is more harder to fathom.

It is a bland affair with too many familiar ingredients. Harvey disapproved of Mary's intended and threatened to cut her off if she married him.

Binny was a butler who maybe just knew too much about his boss.

It takes a while to get going and Meredith is literally stumbling around in the dark at one point.

There is comedy from a hapless police constable but it does not take much to figure out who the culprit could be.

Doesn't quite work.

Superintendent Meredith investigates the murder of drunken waiter Tinkler, who's killed after an event, and suddenly flushed with cash. Meredith looks into Tinkler's wealthy, but cantankerous and mean spirited former boss Harvey Lane.

Not the most exciting of the series, but watchable. The main problem I had with this one, is that the actual clue didn't really work, that the assumption we were supposed to avoid wasn't a given, it was, it's almost impossible not to have realised Lane's circumstances.

Some clever moments, but largely this one is forgettable. Highlights included a solid performance from Bernard Lee, an amusing, wet behind the ears Constable, and Sam Kydd's Tinkler, a shame he was bumped off so early.

Finlay Currie enjoyed chewing the scenery way too much, a little over the top. The main issue though, too many plot holes, the whole thing just doesn't hang together particularly well.

I didn't think he was stupid?

5/10.
