Despite finding worldwide fame as Dracula in Hammer's 1958 film, Christopher Lee tried to avoid being typecast by refusing to return for this follow-up. He first returned to the role in 1966 for Dracula, Prince of Darkness.

It was intended as a sequel with Christopher Lee reprising his role as Dracula but Lee turned the film down. The script went through extensive rewrites with even director Terence Fisher and Peter Cushing (uncredited) working on the script on the set hence the occasional lapse of logic and inconsistencies.

It is a sequel to "Horror of Dracula" with Peter Cushing reprising his energetic and intense portrayal as Dr. Van Helsing.
