Robbie gets a visit from a former friend when he returns to town. His friend is full of exciting tales from traveling by motorcycle and seeing the sights. Robbie asks Katie if he can go on a trip with his friend for a few days.
Ernie and Elmore look forward to driving their girlfriends on a date after they pass their driving test and have licenses. However, the boys do not pass the test, and the girls do. Ernie & Elmore end up stranded at the end of the date.
Steve and Barbara go to San Francisco for a golf tournament, and Uncle Charley goes to a music festival, leaving Ernie in charge. He loses track of Dodie when she goes to town with a friend and has no money to get home.
Ernie agrees to babysit Dodie while Barbara goes shopping. Dodie asks if she can visit a friend, but when Barbara returns home, Ernie does not remember where Dodie went. Both Ernie and Dodie get put in time-out.
Charley looks forward to a visit from a couple of his former shipmates. Both of them could be depended on for rowdy entertainment. However, when his friends arrive, they are now mild-mannered gentlemen.
When Rob is laid off from his job, he and his family moves to San Francisco for a new job offer. Their new friends tell him he works too hard, and Katie starts to think it is because of her and the boys.
Charley is tired of having Fergus living in the Douglas house, causing a disruption to everyone's schedule. Since Fergus is looking for a wife, Charley places an ad in the local newspaper, seeking a wife for Fergus.
Steve's cousin Fergus is still living with the Douglas'. When looking for a wife, he meets a waitress at a bowling alley. Fergus proposes, but Terri declines as she is afraid of the move to Scotland. Steve talks to her and she says yes.
Everyone has a busy day, and no one has time to take care of the triplets. Steve decides to take care of the boys by taking them to work, and asking his secretary to take the day off to care for them. Steve then forgets where she lives.
Chip asks Polly to stop buying useless things as their apartment does not have enough room. When she goes shopping again, a salesman tells her she can have a free set of cookwares - if she hosts a dinner party for eight people that night.
Babara is enthusiastic about everything that involves Steve and his family, almost to an embarrassing point with Steve. When Steve asks her to join his partners and their wives in a bowling match, she is afraid of letting him down.
Katie wants to do more than just stay at home with the triplets, so she gets a job singing in the evenings at a small coffee house. Steve and Charley worry about her, but once they meet the owner, they realize Katie is in good hands.
Polly wants to learn more and experience more so that she is more interesting to Chip. Since Ernie sees her going out a lot without Chip, he start to think there is something wrong with their marriage.
