Cameron Mitchell takes over John Lupton's home as part of his assassination plan
4 September 2014 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"Three Came to Kill" (1960) is a hit man movie with Cameron Mitchell convincing as the hit man who is proud of his top notch status in his line of work. The hit man is a contract killer, a professional who hires out for his killing skills. Hit men appear as main or major characters in a surprising number of movies, dating from at least "The Maltese Falcon" (1941). My current list, which takes in noirs and suspense thrillers but misses most action movies, has 142 entries.

A movie like this comes at the tail end of the classic film noir period. At this time, the photography had largely lost its chiaroscuro. Stories like this retained an emphasis on crime. They didn't exactly glamorize the crime figures but they depicted them as human beings in some depth, not simply evil people, but persons with their own psychologies. Mitchell as assassin dominates this film; his part is the most interesting. The family that he strong arms comes through quite strongly too. John Lupton is the husband, Lyn Thomas his wife. Lupton is an actor along the lines of Marshall Thompson. His character is built up quite well too and involves him in a decision that mirrors one that disturbed him in the past.

Mitchell has taken over their home in order to get a clear shot at his intended victim, a foreign politician, who will be boarding an airplane. Protecting the man is a team consisting of Paul Langton from the State Department and local police. The movie begins with the narration of this period from an authority perspective showing the work of this protection team and lauding their efficiency. Steve Brodie, who assists Mitchell, provides a link to earlier noir classics. He doesn't say much but he conveys menace and threat very well.

Ron Foster appears in support but has little to say. Director Cahn used Foster as leading man in three other late noirs that same year ("Cage of Evil", "The Walking Target" and "The Music Box Kid"). Cahn was an effective and efficient director of these b-films. The scenes never feel long and drawn out. Their very economy and no-nonsense approach, with tight scripts and effective characterizations, makes these Cahn films easy to take and viewable again and again. Cahn is an unheralded second feature director of evident skill in making movies that hold our interest. I record any of his pictures that are aired.
