Charles Saatchi: My love affair with Orson Welles

Hollywood's treatment of Citizen Kane's maker is no surprise from an industry that gives Oscars to so many dud films

• Charles Saatchi's 109 movies not nominated for best picture

How do you handle failure? I handle failure very badly. Bitterly. Indignantly. Girly tears. I once saw a three-hour BBC interview with Orson Welles, and if it is possible to fall for a man just from seeing him on the telly, Mr Welles has had me as his love slave since.

Welles had manifold reasons to be bitter about life's setbacks, not the least being that his unquestioned prowess as a film-maker didn't stop Hollywood treating him like a disease. After years of having to panhandle for backing to fund his film projects – all unwanted by the studios, all later to be recognised as exquisite jewels – he eventually had to rely on appearing in TV commercials, endorsing wines or Spanish sherry, »

Adam Lambert and Tony Curtis: Separated at birth?

22 December 2011 10:50 AM, PST | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

Adam Lambert is growing up and filling out and, despite Thursday's (Dec. 21) bar brawl arrest, we're sure he's got a bright future ahead of him. But for a while now, we've been struck by the growing resemblance between the "American Idol" alum and Hollywood legend Tony Curtis.

Curtis, who passed away in 2010, starred in scads of classics, including in drag Billy Wilder's "Some Like It Hot" (1959) with Jack Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe and again, kind of in drag, in the oft-ridiculed "Spartacus" (1960). He's also the father of actress Jamie Lee Curtis and, we suspect, somehow spiritually related to Lambert.

Draw your own conclusions.

Kenneth Branagh talks Michelle Williams, Olivier, and “My Week With Marilyn” – Awards Alley

19 December 2011 9:45 AM, PST | Hollywoodnews.com | See recent Hollywoodnews.com news »

By Sean O’Connell

Hollywoodnews.com: Early in his career, Kenneth Branagh says he drew comparisons to Sir Laurence Olivier.

“Specifically, it all kicked off when I directed a film of ‘Henry V,’ which of course he had done spectacularly,” Branagh tells me. “The comparisons were always tough because, in my view, he’s an unsurpassable master. I never had any mind or intention of trying to compete with him. But I was inspired by him. That’s probably what gave me the courage to even try directing a film as an actor.”

Now, in Simon Curtis’ nostalgic “My Week With Marilyn,” Branagh can be seen playing Olivier during the production of the 1957 comedy “The Prince and the Showgirl,” which Olivier directed and starred in opposite Marilyn Monroe. It was a difficult shoot, one marked by creative compromise. But Olivier (through Branagh’s brilliant portrayal) understands that to capture a star as bright as Marilyn, »

Downey, Jr. Laughs Off Some Like It Hot Remake Rumours

15 December 2011 5:36 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Robert Downey, Jr. has laughed off rumours he and his Sherlock Holmes co-star Jude Law are set to take on the lead roles in a remake of Hollywood classic Some Like It Hot.

The Hollywood actors have starred together in two films based on the adventures of Arthur Conan Doyle's super-sleuth and they were recently linked to the parts made famous by Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon in a new version of the 1959 hit.

Reports suggest movie studio executives are keen to revamp the movie, which also starred Marilyn Monroe, and Downey, Jr. and Law were favourites to don drag to play a pair of musicians who dress up as women to join an all-female band.

But Downey, Jr. - who wore a transvestite disguise for a scene in the new Sherlock sequel - has brushed off the claims.

During an appearance on U.S. talk show Live! With Kelly on Thursday, he jokes, "I did hear that rumour, it's a very interesting rumour. I've seen him (Law) in drag and I've seen me in drag - I look like my sister on steroids and he looks beautiful, so I don't want to take that risk!" »

‘My Week with Marilyn’ interview with director Simon Curtis

1 December 2011 10:55 AM, PST | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

Working with Marilyn Monroe must have been quite a special experience for third assistant director Colin Clark, whose brief time with the star has turned into two memoirs, and now a film, titled My Week with Marilyn. Similarly, the experience of working with Oscar-nominated actress Michelle Williams portraying Monroe must have been something magical for first-time director Simon Curtis.

I sat down with Curtis in a roundtable interview to discuss working with Williams on her inevitably Oscar-nominated performance, his feelings about Monroe, and what film set he wishes he could witness just as Colin Clark did back in 1956.

My Week with Marilyn is now playing in select theaters.

What fascinates you most about the movie star and production system of the 1950s, and which you wanted to communicate that in the film?

My way into this film was reading Colin Clark’s diaries, and Clark seeing the details as to »

In praise of ... Marilyn Monroe | Editorial

The fascination that inspired Warhol's postage-stamp portraiture and Elton John's outpourings retains its grip

A quarter of a century after Marilyn's death, Madonna was perfecting her Monroe look. Now it's half a century, and Britney Spears is recreating the skirt-blowing scene. The fascination that inspired Warhol's postage-stamp portraiture and Elton John's outpourings retains its grip. There's a flood of books – 600 plus, many of them weighty academic tomes dedicated to the original dumb blonde. The obsession of the cerebral with the celebrity reaches back to her own life, as is affirmed by a new film, My Week With Marilyn: it recounts the condescension of Laurence Olivier and her husband Arthur Miller. So why the fascination with a life that, for all the diversions through tinsel town, stretched from miserable foster homes to barbiturate overdose? There were the looks, of course, and a few performances you can't argue with »

My Week With Marilyn – review

24 November 2011 4:06 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The stand-off between Marilyn Monroe and Laurence Olivier while making The Prince and the Showgirl is recreated wonderfully in this entertaining film

In 1956, Marilyn Monroe came to Britain to make a movie at Pinewood Studios with Laurence Olivier. This was the tense and ill-fated light comedy The Prince and the Showgirl, scripted by Terence Rattigan, a film that became a legend for the lack of chemistry between its insecure and incompatible stars. One was a sexy, feminine, sensual and mercurial diva. The other would go on to make Some Like It Hot.

The story is told – or part of it – in this intensely enjoyable, entirely insubstantial movie featuring glorious performances from Kenneth Branagh and Michelle Williams as Olivier and Monroe, participants in a love triangle of two stars and a nobody. The whole thing is seen from the standpoint of the film's star-struck third assistant director, Colin Clark, son of the great art historian Kenneth, »

/Film Speaks To ‘My Week With Marilyn’ Director Simon Curtis

23 November 2011 2:30 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Fans of movies, celebrity and Hollywood gossip are all going to find a lot to like [1] in My Week With Marilyn. The film, which opens November 23, tells the amazing true story of a young go-getter named Colin Clark (Eddie Redmayne) who developed a unique and magical relationship with Marilyn Monroe when the legendary blond bombshell [2] traveled to England to film The Prince and the Showgirl with Sir Laurence Oliver. Michelle Williams is Oscar-worthy as Monroe [3], Kenneth Branagh is fantastic as Oliver, but no one would have seen this story on screen if it wasn't for director Simon Curtis. My Week With Marilyn is technically Curtis' feature film debut but he's no rookie. He's been directing some of the most talented actors in the world for 20 years. However, it was Clark's two revealing books that finally drew Curtis to the big screen. He first found them well over a decade ago »

Marilyn's Last Sessions by Michel Schneider – review

A novel based on the records of Monroe's analysis is grimly fascinating

It is hard to know by what standards the author of this book can claim it to be a novel. Certainly it does not have the shape, tone or atmosphere of a crafted piece of fiction. What it most resembles is one of those immensely long Vanity Fair articles which start off with screaming headlines and lurid cross-heads, but which after a short distance one has to pursue into the ad-less wastes of the magazine's back pages. One keeps reading in the hope of finding shocking revelations, scurrilous imputations or at least good low-grade gossip, all the while suspecting that one is wasting one's time, which would probably be better spent watching Some Like It Hot on DVD.

This is not to say that Marilyn's Last Sessions is a bad book, but it is such a strange hybrid »
