Universal Makes Deal On Luc Besson-Angelina Jolie Sci-Fi Film

12 December 2011 1:11 PM, PST | Deadline New York | See recent Deadline New York news »

Universal Pictures has acquired 80% of distribution rights — including in the U.S. — to the large-scale dramatic thriller that Luc Besson will direct with Angelina Jolie in the starring role. Besson currently has The Lady in the Oscar mix, but this film sounds like a closer cousin to his earlier efforts like The Professional, La Femme Nikita and The Fifth Element. The script, rooted in true scientific elements, was written by Besson, who will also direct. His EuropaCorp developed the project and will co-finance, and production is set to begin in April 2012 mostly in EuropaCorp’s new production facilities in Paris. Virginie Besson Silla will oversee the project on behalf of EuropaCorp. The film would be Jolie’s next as an actress, and it would come before she teams with director Ridley Scott on a historical epic about Gertrude Bell »

Tmp's 2011 Christmas Wishlist: What Do Movie Buffs Want?

12 December 2011 12:43 PM, PST | Cinelinx | See recent Cinelinx news »

Here at Tmp, we’re a bunch of movie nerds...Seems like a no-brainer, but as such, we tend to have unique items on our Christmas lists.  So if you’ve got a movie buff that you need to shop for this Christmas, maybe our own individual wishlists will aid you in finding that perfect gift.

Carla

The reason it took so long for me to write something down on my wish list is not lack of wanting something, but it is because I want everything.  However, since we are not writing a novel, I did manage to narrow it down to two things:

I love Anthony Hopkins!  He is one of my favorite, if not the favorite, older Hollywood actors.  The man is undoubtedly a living legend in the film world.  What Hopkins fan would not want an autographed photo from Silence of the Lambs?  As a bonus, this »

Disney Unveils New Princess With ‘Sofia The First’ TV Movie, Series

12 December 2011 12:21 PM, PST | Deadline TV | See recent Deadline TV news »

Disney said today that it is introducing a new princess fairytale line beginning next year with the launch of Sofia The First, which will premiere as an animated TV movie in fall 2012 and continue as a series set to bow in spring 2013 on Disney Channel and Disney Junior channels worldwide. It will be the first time among Disney’s storybook princesses franchises that the main character is a little girl, who is whisked off to a glamorous but often confusing castle world of royalty, pomp and new step-siblings after her mom marries the king. The idea is to target the preschool demo. “In Sofia, we have a ‘peer to peer princess,’ a relatable girl experiencing the same social issues as our young viewers – learning how to fit in, making new friends, conquering new skills and building sibling relationships,” said Nancy Kanter, Svp Original Programming and General Manager of Disney Junior Worldwide. »

Angelina Jolie to star is Besson Film?

Everyone has a favorite action film director. You might fancy Tony Scott for films like Top Gun, Man on Fire and Unstoppable. You might really dig Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill and Inglorious Basterds. I happen to fancy Luc Besson. For me, Leon: The Professional and The Fifth Element are total classics. Is the action visionary conjuring up something new? And does he have Angelina Jolie in mind to star? Let’s find out!

Here’s what we know so far. Deadline has recently explained that Besson is working on an as of yet untitled new film. He has written the script and will direct the picture they say is a more dramatic thriller based on true science. That description is pretty vague, but here is to hoping there is a Nikita or Colombiana vibe. Jolie has more than proven she can carry »

'It's par for the course' – actor defends directing debut against claims of copyright infringement from Croatian author

Angelina Jolie has dismissed a lawsuit filed against her directing debut, In the Land of Blood and Honey, which claims it borrows liberally from a 2007 book by a Croatian journalist about the Balkan conflict of the early 1990s.

James Braddock, also known as Josip Knežević, is suing Jolie and the producers of her film in the northern district court of Illinois claiming they infringed the copyright on his book The Soul Shattering. Both works, he alleges, are set in wartorn Bosnia and Herzegovina and feature a main female character who is captured, imprisoned and raped by soldiers, as well as a Serbian camp commander who falls in love with her and helps her escape.

In an interview with the La Times published yesterday, Jolie denied ever having read Braddock's book. "It's par for the course. »

Jolie & Besson: Together At Last?

Though he usually specialises in high concept action films and thrillers, Luc Besson has nevertheless always been able to attract solid star wattage to take on the lead roles. And one of his upcoming projects appears to be no different, with Angelina Jolie reportedly in talks to star.Very little else is known about the film (not even the title), aside from the fact that it’s apparently a big-scale thriller that has its roots in true scientific elements. Who votes for an action-packed techfest set around the Large Hadron Collider?Besson, who has been shepherding more projects as a producer these days, has written and plans to direct this one once he’s finished doing the press rounds for his last directing gig, high-profile biopic The Lady. Angelina Jolie to Headline Untitled Luc Besson Thriller

6 December 2011 2:32 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Angelina Jolie is in talks to headline Luc Besson's next project, an untitled thriller in line with the director's earliest work.

Both Luc Besson and Angelina Jolie finished working on films that could go head-to-head in the Oscar race this next year. Angelina Jolie made her directorial debut with In the Land of Blood and Honey, while Luc Besson is garnering rave reviews for his Aung San Suu Kyi biopic The Lady. This untitled thriller would be the next project for both of them.

No plot details have been released at this time. The film is said to be rooted in true scientific elements (whatever that means). If she signs on, Angelina Jolie will shoot the movie before moving onto Ridley Scott's Gertrude Bell biopic. The actress is also still planning to shoot Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty-themed fantasy Maleficent sometime next year.

Angelina Jolie in talks to star in Luc Besson dramatic thriller

6 December 2011 2:06 PM, PST | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

Angelina Jolie may be set to star next in a dramatic thriller after coming off of her feature directorial and screenwriting debut In the Land of Blood and Honey. Deadline reports that she is in talks for the untitled big-scale movie to be written and directed by Luc Besson. The thriller is reportedly similar to Besson’s early films such as The Professional, La Femme Nikita and The Fifth Element. Jolie is currently in “serious talks” to star in the film that “is rooted in true scientific elements” next spring. As usual with Besson projects it is being developed and financed by EuropaCorp.

This film is slated to film before Jolie teams with director Ridley Scott on the Gertrude Bell historical epic, which is being rewritten by Jeffrey Caine (The Constant Gardener). It is very likely that both of these films will land at the same studio.

Jolie is also likely to star in Maleficent, »

While she’s currently prepping for the release of her directorial debut In the Land of Blood and Honey, Angelina Jolie is also looking towards her next acting vehicle. Deadline reports that Jolie is in serious talks to star in a big scale action thriller written and directed by Luc Besson (The Professional, The Fifth Element). Besson just finished his own prestige pic The Lady, but it looks like he’s itching to get back to his action roots with his next project. The film is described as a dramatic thriller “rooted in true scientific elements” and the plan is to shoot with Jolie next spring. Hit the jump for more on Jolie’s upcoming slate of projects. Jolie seems a good fit for the stylized thriller world of Besson, so I’m interested to hear more about the project. The untitled action pic will apparently be followed by the »

“Twilight” tops, “Muppets” drop, and smaller films (Shame, Descendants, Artist) take center stage.

4 December 2011 10:42 AM, PST | Hollywoodnews.com | See recent Hollywoodnews.com news »

By Scott Mendelson

HollywoodNews.com: As is sometimes the case with the post-Thanksgiving weekend, studios did not offer up a single new wide release. While that’s understandable considering the customary huge drops that the holdovers take this weekend, it’s frustrating this year considering the sheer amount of product being released over the last ten days of the year (does Summit really expect The Darkest Hour to strike huge over Christmas weekend?). Anyway, to the surprise of some (including me), a larger-than-expected drop for The Muppets allowed Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn part I to top the box office for the third weekend in a row. The fourth film in the saga grossed $16.9 million, for a drop of 60% and a cume of $247 million. While it’s still trailing the respective end-of-third weekend totals of New Moon ($267 million) and Eclipse ($255 million), it had the largest third weekend of the franchise and »

In Theaters: See What The 'Outrage' Is All About As 'Shame' & 'Sleeping Beauty' Seduce Theatres

2 December 2011 12:45 PM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

A surprisingly low-key movie weekend for the heat of the awards season, no? The lack of truly big releases in the game provides quite the assist for smaller, artsy releases like "Shame," "Sleeping Beauty" and Takeshi Kitano's "Outrage," which may have been otherwise buried in terms of attention-- come on, we all know 'Muppets' is taking the b.o. trophy away from those horny vampires. Though we don't think the Michael Fassbender-sexes-every-lady-in-nyc flick would really have had a hard time getting butts in seats anyway. As long as your facist cinema house doesn't ban in for its Nc-17 rating! Ok, so what's on the docket this weekend? I know it sounds flippant when I describe the serious sex-addiction drama "Shame" as "Fassbender-sexes-every-lady-in-nyc," but don't act like that is not a huge selling point for this movie. Do not even play. Not after that eye-fucking trailer.  Women will be out in. »

We open up with a surprising 15 minute conversation centered on television, which is something we rarely get into, and then translate to awards season talk as well as a conversation on how we go about selecting our own end of the year top ten lists. From there we discuss Roman Polanski's Carnage, Jason Reitman's Young Adult and George Clooney's The Ides of March now that Laremy has finally seen it. Considering The Ides of March, I feel I should also mention you can check it in a double feature with Moneyball this weekend in select cities, click here to see if it's playing near you.
