Cinderella: Disney's fairytale is stuck in the dark ages

22 August 2015 1:00 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

This modern retelling definitely looks like a 2015 blockbuster but it peddles some uncomfortably old-fashioned values

Disney traditionalists are sure to find comfort in Kenneth Branagh’s live-action Cinderella as it glides on to home video this week, because unlike the majority of recent efforts to revive the studio’s flagship fairytales, this new spin on the glass-slippered classic makes few concessions to contemporary life. Indeed, the film plays out almost exactly as Walt himself might have envisioned, eschewing the metatextual postmodernism of last year’s Sleeping Beauty reboot Maleficent and the general batshittery of Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland.

Still, tradition has a short memory, so while the most influential version of the Cinderella story is probably the 1697 text by Charles Perrault, this new telling owes more to Disney’s own 1950 animated adaptation. Handily, this allows the studio to credit the story both to Perrault and “Disney’s Cinderella »

11 August 2015 2:00 AM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

Is there a bigger name in animation than Disney?

Between 1937 and 2014, Walt Disney Animation Studios has released no less than 54 theatrical films, many of which are regarded as true classics of the medium. And naturally, some of them are less beloved. For every "Sleeping Beauty" or "The Little Mermaid," there's also a "Home on the Range" or "Atlantis: The Lost Empire."

That said, some of Disney's animated efforts tend to get a bad rap. Maybe not every one their 54 films is solid gold, but there are some that deserve more acclaim and financial success than they received. Here are our top ten underrated Disney movies.

The Disney Channel’s new original movie “Descendants” brings together the children of many iconic Disney characters, no easy feat for screenwriters Josann McGibbon and Sara Parriot. The writing duo behind “Runaway Bride” and the USA series “The Starter Wife” starring Debra Messing were approached to take on a story surrounding Disney’s second generation and relished the opportunity to re-imagine their favorite childhood characters 20 years later. Disney Guys Envisioned as Real People—See Prince Charming, Hercules, Tarzan and More Characters Come Alive!

Thanks to Jirka Väätäinen, fantasy looks a lot more like reality. The artist, who hails from Helsinki, Finland, has envisioned male Disney characters in "real life," and the results are pretty darn magical. "This is a personal project and has no affiliation with Disney in any way," he writes on Bēhance. Using Photoshop, Melbourne-based Väätäinen imagined what characters from classic movies like Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, The Little Mermaid and Sleeping Beauty might look like if they appeared a little less cartoonish and a lot more like the supermodels you might see in the pages of Esquire or GQ. Kristin Chenoweth, Kenny Ortega Celebrate Premiere of Disney Channel’s ‘Descendants’

A high school film filled with show tunes fared well for Disney Channel nine years ago. The network gives the “High School Musical” recipe another try with helmer Kenny Ortega in its biggest production to date, “Descendants.”

The TV movie premiered Friday at Walt Disney Studios. Before the screening, Disney Channel President Gary Marsh told attendees about the two and a half years of work that went into the project.

“We have now made 100 Disney Channel original movies, and this is by far the biggest and most ambitious movie we’ve ever attempted,” Marsh said.

The feature follows the malevolent teenage offspring of popular Disney villains from “Sleeping Beauty,” “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” “101 Dalmatians” and “Aladdin.” The live-action pic fuses classic tales and high school drama with original music for Mouse fans of all ages, an attempt at reaching past the network’s target demos.

'Descendants' Preview Brings Classic Disney Characters to Life

23 July 2015 6:13 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

High School Musical director Kenny Ortega is returning to the Disney Channel with the all-new original TV movie Descendants, which brings some awfully wicked offspring to life. The first 6-minutes have debuted online, with Kenny Ortega introducing the movie and the wild thrills it contains. Here, we get to meet the teenage son of Belle and Beast, who rule over the fantasy kingdom of Auradon. All of the fairytale kingdoms have come together as one, for a story about what happens after 'happily ever after'.

Kenny Ortega describes Disney's Descendants as a modern fairy tale. As he puts it, it's a 'Once Upon a Now' story that will surely resonate with today's youth, as well as their parents alike. This opening prologue springs from the interface of an iPad, telling how Beast became president of Auradon, booting all of the villains and their sidekicks off to the Isle of the Lost. »

‘Star-Lord and Kitty Pryde’ #1 is a little fun, a little unnecessary

Star-Lord and Kitty Pryde #1

In Star-Lord and Kitty Pryde #1, Peter Quill finds himself separated from his fellow remaining Marvel heroes on the life raft (after the events of Secret Wars #4) and as a lounge singer in Manhattan. The sight of Star-Lord (or Steve Rogers as he goes by now) singing songs from The Little Mermaid and Sleeping Beauty is quite hilarious (and a tiny bit emotional in one scene) and will definitely have fans racking their brains for which Disney prince Chris Pratt should play. The main plot continues the Secret Wars-wide theme of certain characters finding “anomalies” that prove that maybe Dr. Doom isn’t a god, and the universe has been around longer than him. The main plot of the comic rests on the fact that Kitty Pryde and Star-Lord had a »
