Storyline

An Italian submarine returns from a mission. The crew members look forward to reunite with their family, and to escape the promiscuity that causes tensions to run high amongst sailors. Shortly before reaching safe waters, disaster strikes: a squadron of enemy airplanes bombs the submarine, which sinks to the bottom of the sea, 110 meters below the waterline. The captain immediately decides to evacuate the survivors via the onboard rescue capsule, but before he can start the tedious process of sending his men one by one to the surface, difficulties accumulate. The grievously wounded sailors found in one of the submarine compartments must somehow be dealt with. And he quickly realizes that this is the least of his problems... A very rare gem from the other side of the Alpes.

I remember seeing this little war movie several years go, aired on Canal +, in Cinema de Quartier broadcast, where many gems were shown to french movie buffs audiences. I have it somewhere in my collection, drowned among hundreds of other films. I have to search for it. I can't tell you the excact topic, but I remember enough to say it is a really interesting and entertaining war picture about a submarine crew during WW2. In black and white. I must admit that I did not expect such a film, especially Italian. German, yes, for sure, but not Italian. It's a desperate story, with an unexpected ending. I don't think many people saw it. What a pity.

Far from the spaghetti war films the Italian movie industry gave us some years later, during the mid sixties...
