Jennie forgets her speech at what appears to be a graduation ceremony, usually held in lat May or early June. When her father comforts her in the family car a few moments later, the cherry blossoms are in bloom - usually, early April in Washington (DC). However, after they leave the car - and leave the radio on, which is an irresponsible action that would drain the car's battery in 1941 - a news bulletin breaks in, announcing the attack on Pearl Harbor, which took place in early December of 1941. While it is possible that a (first semester) graduation could have taken place in December, no cherry blossoms would have been in bloom then, nor would the weather have been mild enough as depicted in the accompanying scenes.
