Erstwhile journalist and dedicated boozehound John Bell (Belle de Jour's Georges Marchal) is desperate to get a big scoop that will rejuvenate his career. He finds it in the form of a map supplied to him by Hong Kong night club owner Slansky (Jose Jaspe, the train conductor in 1972's Horror Express), which reveals--thanks to the translation skills of fellow China hand Mamie (Dori Dorika)--a nefarious plot to blow up a dam on the Yellow River and wipe out the livelihood of millions of poverty stricken farmers. On the train trip to the story, John meets beautiful Christian missionary Dorothy (Anita Ekberg) and slowly begins to realize that the story that will make him rich will also destroy the lives of countless innocent Chinese. Will he use his knowledge of the plot to put a stop to it--or will he simply cash a pay cheque? An ambitious thriller shot in Cinecitta Studios, Dam On the Yellow River is set during the waning days of the Chinese civil war, but manages to tell its story without mentioning Communists, Nationalists, or Mao Tse-Tung. And I'd bet anything the locomotive featured showed up in more than one spaghetti western in years to come.
