Parents Guide for
Anatomy of a Murder (1959) More at IMDbPro »

The content of this page was created directly by users and has not been screened or verified by IMDb staff.
Since the beliefs that parents want to instill in their children can vary greatly, we ask that, instead of adding your personal opinions about what is right or wrong in a film, you use this feature to help parents make informed viewing decisions by describing the facts of relevant scenes in the title for each one of the different categories: Sex and Nudity, Violence and Gore, Profanity, Alcohol/Drugs/Smoking, and Frightening/Intense Scenes.

Sex & Nudity

Much of the film focuses on an alleged rape which occurs off screen.

The lead female character is demonstrably provocative in her posing and coming on to her husband's lawyer and others. But there is no actual sex or nudity onscreen at all.

However, there is much explicit discussion of a rape.

Violence & Gore

The film revolves around a murder which occurred offscreen but was discussed in detail.

Paul was angry during the court scene and slammed his opponents' table.

Lt. Manion was teased in jail and he was in a small fight with that man.

For a 1959 film, this was quite vulgar.

Bitch, bastard, shit, hell, damn, slut are all used more than once.

Consumption of both alcohol and tobacco occur frequently throughout the film by both male and female characters.

Paul's anger scene is a little intense.

If your imagination is very good, the rape scene and the murder scene's discussion and description will be intense to you.

The court scenes are intense as the competing parties were VERY verbally rough.

The plot of this film is dark.

Suggested MPAA rating: PG-13 for thematic elements, mild violence, sexual references and language.

Total: 19/50. Recommended for 13 and up.
