Spike Jonze Unleashes a Totally Wild Margaret Qualley in Quirky New Kenzo Short Film – Watch

29 August 2016 8:52 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

“When we think about perfume campaigns, we think about a pretty girl with a bottle. This clip is exactly the opposite. It’s very multi-faceted and different; it takes the spectator by surprise.”

So says actress (and former dancer and, yes, that little bit of trivia will become very important very soon) Margaret Qualley of her turn in the Spike Jonze-directed short film-and-also-commercial for the company’s new fragrance Kenzo World. The latest snippet of cinematic expression from the fashion house is a short entitled “My Mutant Brain” that has been helmed by Jonze — and his stamps are all over the very funny, very energetic short — with Qualley starring as a charmingly bored young socialite who quite literally breaks free of the trappings of what looks to be a dreadfully boring event, all to dance her troubles away.

11 August 2016 4:00 PM, PDT | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Bruce Springsteen borrowed the title for his 1975 song “Thunder Road” from a 1958 Robert Mitchum movie, and since then it’s been borrowed back for a couple of TV movies. But filmmaker Jim Cummings not only took the title for his short film that won the Grand Prize at Sundance this year, he based his film around a performance of the Springsteen song, and even wrangled permission to use the song from the always-picky rock star. “Thunder Road,” one of the finalists in TheWrap’s ShortList Film Festival, is an alternately funny and wrenching story about a cop (played by Cummings »

Watch: Steven Spielberg’s Short War Film ‘Escape to Nowhere’ From 1961

29 July 2016 11:17 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

In 1961, a 14-year-old Steven Spielberg produced and directed one of this first short films, the ominously named “Escape to Nowhere.” In the opening sequence to the movie, a title card reads “Produced and Directed by Steve Spielberg” before one of the first shots that states the setting is “Somewhere in East Africa.”

There is no dialogue in the two-minute clip that has surfaced online, just battle scenes that play to the sound of Richard Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries.” (Something tells us Spielberg was not able to license the rights to the music.) Spielberg’s sister Anne Spielberg is the only person credited in the cast on IMDb, which states that the entire short is 40 minutes long.

Though the production value is exactly what one would expect from a teenage filmmaker, Spielberg’s eye for dramatic action scenes and swiftly-paced editing are apparent even at this young age. “Escape »

Female Led Movie Trigger Warning In Development At Thunder Road

24 June 2016 4:01 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Thunder Road – the production company that most recently delivered John Wick and Sicario – has snapped up a spec script written by Josh Olson (A History Of Violence) and John Brancato (Terminator: Salvation), titled Trigger Warning. The film is an original action tale with a female hero at its centre – and its development ensures the chance of women-oriented stories beyond the planned remakes and re-boots of male-led movies.

Little is known about the specific plot of Trigger Warning but, unsurprisingly, it is described in broad terms through comparison to well-known male-led movies. This is almost unavoidable, since the genre has historically been dominated by male-centric tales and so, Trigger Warning is characterised as a female Rambo: First Blood, with a dash of John Wick thrown in.

The significance of this project cannot be overstated. There has, for some time, been an increasingly vocal call for better female representation in leading roles in movies, »

Sicario 2 Isn't a True Sequel, Sicario 3 Already Being Planned

16 June 2016 3:21 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

One of last year's surprise hits was the critically-acclaimed Lionsgate film Sicario, which wasn't exactly a box office blockbuster, but did fare decently for a September movie, taking in $84 million worldwide from a $30 million budget. Just a month after this thriller starring Emily Blunt hit theaters, Lionsgate announced that a follow-up was coming, and just last month, Italian director Stefano Sollima (Suburra) stepped in to take the helm. While there is still much we don't know about the story, this sequel, entitled Soldado ("soldier" in Spanish), will not be your typical follow-up. The director also teased that a third installment is already in the works.

Last year's Sicario is set in the lawless border area stretching between the U.S. and Mexico, where an idealistic FBI agent (Emily Blunt) is exposed to the brutal world of international drug trafficking by members of a government task force (Josh Brolin, Benicio Del Toro »
