Raiders of the lost heritage
27 September 2008 | by See all my reviews

Not to be mistaken for the eponymous movie starring Shirley Temple. This is an adventure yarn which sometimes has Hustonian accents : a search for money ,a thing people from Tahiti (with a few exceptions ) do not care about ,that's what the story tells us anyway;a touch of period piece "son of fury" thrown in for good measure. But it's handicapped by a muddled screenplay and a listless directing:Ralph Habib was more interested in filming the Tahitian landscapes than in directing his actors who are good though:Karl Heinz Boehm (whose part in the Sissi Saga completely outstripped his more ambitious movies such as "peeping tom" and "the four horsemen of the Apocalypse");Martine Carol ,whose career was slowly declining ,because of the coming of Brigitte Bardot;Serge Reggiani ,a specialist of the parts of villains(see also "Manon" "Les POrtes De La Nuit" )and Roger Livesey I'd never heard of before watching this film.Plus Arletty.....

The cast and credits read " Avec Le Concours D'Arletty" a French equivalent of the American "special guest star" ,mentions which have disappeared in today's credits. Now,famous actors prefer to be "uncredited" to provide the viewer with a surprise (see Sean Connery in "Robin Hood Prince of Thieves" ).Arletty has a five -minute presence on the screen and ,a gift from the editor ,a short appearance in the very last sequence: a final which is borrowed from "Pepe Le Moko" ,both Frehel'song and Gabin's and Mireille Balin's conversation revolved around nostalgia :Paris ,the Boulevards ,the Eiffel Tower...and Pigalle!

A man who (as it seems) has found peace of mind in Tahiti is to inherit his wealthy uncle's fortune .Some people are trying to find him ,some are honest ,some are criminals .This man becomes more and more a mirage and the ending, when not completely unexpected ,was probably not what the 1958 audience expected.

Filmed on location in Tahiti.Tahiti is the real star of the film.I wish I was here!
