This was a considerably expanded version of Ken Hughes's famous TV play, "Sammy", which had won rave reviews in 1958. The TV play had lasted only half-an-hour and had only one actor in it - Anthony Newley, who moved into stardom as a result of his award-winning performance. This film version did not enjoy similar success.
