Storyline

Le Fondu, a famous gangster, escapes from the hospital where he was detained, killing an inspector in the process. The colleague of the deceased inspector, Paul Vardier, vows to avenge him. The task seems hopeless: Le Fondu has disappeared without a trace and nobody has a clue about his hide-out. There is only one faint possibility left: coerce Le Fondu's nephew into becoming an informer. Paul gets assigned as buddy Gilbert Barot, fresh from the police academy, and whose alluring wife Lucie quickly arouses the interest of Paul. Paul is quickly led to play two dangerous games simultaneously seducing the wife of his colleague, and tracking with him Le Fondu, who himself does not remain inactive... Adultery and hunting for Charles Vanel occupy Michel Piccoli
17 January 2016 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"Rafles sur la ville" (1958) aka "Sinners of Paris" is a solid film noir without being outstanding. It has quite a few moments in which the cast lights up the screen. It has good noir visuals, typical of the French noir movies of this period. It's well worth watching.

Charles Vanel's presence as a ruthless gangster adds a lot to the film. The story opens with his escape from prison during which he kills a policeman whose partner is Michel Piccoli, the story's main character. Piccoli is quite lively as a cynical inspector. He manipulates Vanel's nephew, Marcel Mouloudji, to get a lead on where Vanel might be hiding out. The police department scenes are quite full, introducing a variety of characters. There's decent group acting here and throughout.

The movie has several attractive female characters with speaking roles that spice up the show, not to mention some showgirls dancing and backstage. The nephew is a pimp for Monique Tanguy. Vanel's love interest is a showgirl, Bella Darvi. Piccoli takes an interest in his new partner's (François Guérin's) wife, Danik Patisson, and has an affair with her.

All in all, this makes for decent movie entertainment.
