Trivia

This was Don Knotts' film debut. He met Andy Griffith when he played the same part in Broadway's "No Time For Sergeants". Griffith remembered Knotts when he was looking for someone to play bumbling Deputy Barney Fife on The Andy Griffith Show (1960). The two formed a lifelong friendship. After Knotts left Andy Griffith Show, he later made guest appearances on it and another Andy Griffith television series, Matlock (1986). In 2006, Griffith even broke the news of Knotts' passing to the media. See more »

Goofs

When General Bush and General Pollard meet, General Bush is wearing a hat with general officer embellishments on the brim, known as "scrambled eggs" in military parlance, but General Pollard's hat does not have scrambled eggs on the brim, which is incorrect, since all officers of Major or above for Army, Air Force, or Marines would rightly have scrambled eggs on the brim. Maj. Demming: Do you get along alright with your mother?
Will Stockdale: No, sir, I can't hardly say that I do...
Maj. Demming: Oh, I see. She's very strict with you; she's always hovering over you, hmm?
Will Stockdale: No, sir, just the opposite.
Maj. Demming: Oh, she's never there?
Will Stockdale: That's right.
Maj. Demming: And you, uh, you resent this neglect, don't you?
Will Stockdale: Well, no, sir. I don't resent nothin'.
Maj. Demming: Ah, come now, son. Now don't be bashful - that's a common situation. Does, uh, she beat you?
Will Stockdale: Naw!

Damn Funny!
14 May 2001 | by See all my reviews

I watched this movie begrudgingly one day and I was amazed at how funny it was. It caught me completely off guard. The drill sergeant is played to perfection by Myron McCormick, whose life is made miserable by hayseed Griffith. Many very funny vignettes, the bar scene still has me LOL, as does much of the movie. Watch and enjoy.
