Anachronisms 

About 26 minutes into the film, as the sergeant is begging the lieutenant for more replacements, a mixed-race combat unit walks by in the background. The armed forces did not integrate until after WWII.

The tanks shown are M-26 Pershings, a tank that didn't come into use until the last months of the war, and never deployed in the island war of the Pacific theater.

Character error 

In the film, General Cummings is shown to be a Brigadier (one star) General. In the Norman Mailer novel on which the film is based, General Cummings is a Major General (two stars), the normal rank an Army division commander holds.
