Camelot 45th Anniversary Blu-Ray Book Review And Giveaway

16 May 2012 10:21 AM, PDT | AreYouScreening.com | See recent AreYouScreening news »

Camelot hardly needs any introduction at this point, unless it’s aimed at those who have to this point dismissed the classic status of the musical, but I’m going to give it one anyway. Built from the Lerner and Loewe production, and now celebrating its 45th Anniversary, it is one of the best musicals to ever grace the big screen. Somewhat surprisingly, among musicals (and classics for that matter) it actually holds up rather well insofar as its ability to engage new audiences.

The story of King Arthur, specifically with “The Once and Future King” as inspiration (and it makes a difference), has rarely been so passionately put forward, and Richard Harris, Vanessa Redgrave, and Franco Nero give performances that are themselves the stuff of legends.

The second to last directorial work of Joshua Logan (Paint Your Wagon, South Pacific, Bus Stop), Camelot shows his obvious hand when it »

The Week In Horror March 5th, 2012

5 March 2012 4:02 PM, PST | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

Whew! Apologies for already falling behind on the “Week in Horror” column, but I had a visitor in from out of town (Vin Technoweenie from the very early days of Icons Of Fright!) and there’s that pesky “day job”, but I regress! Let’s get right to it then, lots going on in the horror world!

In television news, David Morrissey (Basic Instinct 2) has been cast as The Governor in the upcoming 3rd season of The Walking Dead. (Still haven’t started season 2 so I’m way behind here.) However, I have read the comics and “The Governor” is one of the most vile, horrific characters to ever grace the pages of comics. It’ll be interesting to see him interpreted in live action for The Walking Dead series. Does this mean we’ll also be seeing Michonne? Let’s hope so. She’s a bad-ass.

Jean Dujardin, Charles Boyer, Maurice Chevalier, Gérard Depardieu: Oscars French Actors

24 January 2012 2:11 PM, PST | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Jean Dujardin, The Artist Best Actor Academy Award nominee Jean Dujardin — for Michel Hazanavicius' The Artist — is a first-time Oscar nominee and only the fourth Frenchman to be shortlisted for an Academy Award in the acting categories. Dujardin's predecessors were Best Actor nominees Maurice Chevalier for the Ernst Lubitsch musicals The Big Pond and The Love Parade (1929-30); Charles Boyer for Clarence Brown's Conquest (1937), John Cromwell's Algiers (1938), George Cukor's Gaslight (1944), and Joshua Logan's Fanny (1961); and Gérard Depardieu, the only actor nominated for a French-speaking role, for Jean-Paul Rappeneau's Cyrano de Bergerac (1990). None of those three performers ended up taking home the Best Actor Oscar statuette, though at the 1959 Academy Awards ceremony Chevalier was awarded an Honorary Oscar "for his contributions to the world of entertainment for more than half a century." (Not coincidentally, that was the year he failed to be nominated for Vincente Minnelli »

The history of MGM: the golden era

24 January 2012 3:12 AM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Zoe’s continues her journey through the turbulent history of one of Hollywood’s most influential studios, as we arrive at MGM's post-war golden era. Plus, a bit of 3D, too...

As the end of World War II approached, a new world dawned for MGM – a world which had changed dramatically. Attitudes and lifestyles had changed, but most importantly audiences had changed. Here was an opportunity: MGM’s chance to start afresh. And so in 1944, MGM embarked on what would become the most successful period in its history. After the war, the slate was wiped clean.

Gone were the tired, tried-and-tested formulas, and gone were the aging names and stars, as a new unit was established at MGM. It was up to this unit, anchored by an experienced producer and made up of bright young talent, to transform MGM’s signature high-production style into something new and modern in order »

Hollywood costumes showcased in V&A blockbuster exhibition

Dorothy's dress from the Wizard of Oz and Rocky's shorts among items featured in show celebrating art of costume design

Soon after they began working on Hollywood Costume, the exhibition of film costume design which opens at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in October, costume designer Deborah Nadoolman Landis sent her co-curator Sir Christopher Frayling two postcards.

The first was a still from Brokeback Mountain, showing Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal wearing jeans, washed-out shirts and cowboy hats. On the back she had written: "This is costume design." The second was of Audrey Hepburn wearing Givenchy couture; on the back she had written: "This isn't."

"Unfortunately, the postcards arrived in the wrong order, so it was a couple of days before I understood," recalls Frayling. "But Deborah is right, and that is the message of this exhibition."

The V&A anticipates that Hollywood Costume could be one of its most popular exhibitions, »

Camelot 45th Anniversary Blu-ray Arrives April 24th

12 January 2012 10:54 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Camelot -- the musical classic based on the Tony Award-winning stage production from Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe (Gigi, My Fair Lady) will celebrate its 45th anniversary this year with a newly remastered Blu-ray version, debuting April 24 from Warner Home Video.

Based on T.H. White's "The Once and Future King," this lavish film adaptation recalls a fleeting, mythical time of love and chivalry -- the reign of King Arthur and the Knights of The Round Table. Although torn apart by the conflicts between passion, love, honor and duty, it was a golden era that could have been ... and could yet be. Richard Harris (Harry Potter 1 and 2, Unforgiven) stars as King Arthur, with Vanessa Redgrave (Coriolanus, Letters to Juliet) opposite him as Queen Guinevere and Franco Nero, Redgrave's current husband (Die Hard 2) as Lancelot. Joshua Logan directed and Jack L. Warner produced.
