Trivia

When the series premiered, it was a filmed sitcom with a musical performance in each episode. Ratings floundered, so in December the format was revised and it became a live sketch-comedy/variety show. The numbers didn't improve, so they reverted to the sitcom format. See more »

Historical perspective
23 August 2006 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

I was allowed to stay up and watch this show as a kid. Putting it in a historical perspective, it was a clever show. The fact that George had a system to "snoop" on the rest of the cast's conversations which would appear on his study's television, made this show even funny to a preschooler (me). The rest of the cast even including Gracie were at his mercy and depending on the character, George could make their live's miserable and confusing. The cast was well picked and included some of the more seasoned comedy performers of the time. He played it all straight faced and along with The Jack Benny Show, these were classics of their time and still funnier than most offerings on Comedy Central.
