Risk vs. Reward: History Makes a Perfect Fit in Longform Races

Almost as soon as “The People v. O.J.: American Crime Story” was announced, you could hear the mutterings of people wondering why anyone would feel the need to rehash the oft-told saga from the Bronco car chase through to the controversial verdict.

“We picked up on that initial reaction of fatigue and skepticism because the subject matter was so pervasive,” says “O.J.” producer Nina Jacobson. “What more could be said that hadn’t been said? But there was so much more to say by giving people emotional access to these characters 20 years later.”

Historic dramas have always played well with audiences, but this season many of this year’s biggest TV movies and limited series, from HBO’s “Confirmation” and “All the Way” to FX’s “O.J.” and Hulu’s “11.22.63,” involve re-creations of fairly recent events.

Cuba Gooding Jr. on ‘People v. O.J. Simpson’: ‘I’m Not Here to Prove His Innocence or Guilt’

Of all the cast members in “The People v. O.J. Simpson,” Cuba Gooding, Jr. may have the toughest challenge: He has to embody someone everyone has an opinion on.

But guilty or innocent, Gooding says he’ll never reveal his true feelings about the case — or the former Heisman trophy winner, who’s now in prison on an unrelated charge. In this week’s episode, we’ll see the infamous Bronco chase — which reveals Simpson at his most vulnerable, threatening to commit suicide as pal A.C. Cowling drives along the 405.

Here, Gooding tells Variety about the role he calls the hardest he’s ever played.

Why did you decide to take on this role?

Two words: Ryan MurphyTrue story: My agent called and said there’s a script here. It’s 167 pages, some guy with a lot of money in Australia wants to tell the story of the innocence of O.J. Simpson. »

‘People v. O.J. Simpson’ Producers on the Secrets of that Famous Trial: ‘It’s Stranger Than Fiction’

Screenwriters Larry Karaszewski and Scott Alexander are self-proclaimed “total TV novices.” Renowned for their film credits — which range from “Big Eyes” to “The People vs. Larry Flynt” — they’d never tried their hands at television. It took the persuasive powers of producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson and the prospect of adapting Jeffrey Toobin’s book, “The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson,” to finally lure them to the medium.

“It was just exploding with characters and weird incidents and odd detail,” says Alexander. “We love that stuff.” They knew that the story could only be told in a series — a two-hour movie wouldn’t suffice. So they lent their prodigious talents to the script, and serve as executive producers — along with Ryan Murphy, Jacobson and Simpson — on FX’s “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story,” which debuts February 2nd.
