IMDbTV Pick: Showtime's "Penny Dreadful"

The subtle trick Showtime's "Penny Dreadful is that it is far less about the blood, gore and the specter of gruesome death than the sharp pain and exhilarating pleasure of living, and the terror of feeling alone even in close company. Read our review in the May Picks section.

The show that gave us Joey Deacon!
8 June 2004 | by (England) – See all my reviews

Blue Peter was one of the first children's television shows to feature a cerebral palsy victim on a regular basis to raise awareness of the disease, and when they introduced a nation's youth to the unforgettable Joey Deacon, a legendary cult hero was born, a man thousands of kids imitated and referenced in the course of their schoolyard capers. As if that wasn't enough to cement Blue Peter's reputation, we also had the heartbreaking vandalism of the Blue Peter garden (which a bunch of football players later owned up to), John Noakes and the over-enthusiastic Shep, Mark Curry's huge spectacles, "sticky backed plastic" and "chocolate covered button sweets", toys made out of detergent bottles and cereal boxes... Blue Peter, I salute you! (Can't forget the advent crown either!)
