Jewel thieves in prison are being eliminated one by one
21 June 2014 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"Tous peuvent me tuer" (1957) is a film noir told with comic elements. The story is a crime story, photographed in classic noir style of the times.

Five jewel thieves execute a robbery flawlessly. They hide the loot. Needing an alibi, they break into a house and get drunk. This leads to a 1-year sentence for each of them and a fine, a small price to pay for getting away with 500 million worth of jewels. In prison, however, the men start dying, one an apparent accident and two more as apparent suicides. Two remain. Who is doing this? They seem to have made every effort to keep the robbery secret. Have they actually? What will happen? The story has some good and logical surprises.

The comic elements include the prison warden, one of the surviving gang members who is not really a tough guy, and a prison guard. The film manages to survive the comic elements and still come across as a noir, but not by that much.

Peter van Eyck is always an attraction. His part is not all that large. Anouk Aimee plays the girl friend of one of the gang. Both van Eyck and Aimee lift their roles above the somewhat mundane dialog of others in the story.

Overall, it's a worthy effort and a decent film while no classic. It will most please fans who want a film with a lighter touch even though there are several murders in it, but noir fans will welcome it as an addition to the list even if it's by no means that hard-boiled.
