Not a bad little film.
18 May 2004 | by (Fresno, California) – See all my reviews

I recommend the 1957 version of "Sorority Girl" to my fellow film buffs out there in cyberspace. It's no classic by any means, but it's not a bad adaptation of the novel, "End As A Man", which was also filmed around that same time with the title "The Strange One". The novel is set in a military school & the "Strange One" followed the plot closely there, but of course "Sorority Girl" changes the setting to a university in Southern California. I think the campus shots were filmed on the either the USC or the UCLA campus. It's an American International production, which makes most people envision low budget exploitation films, but even though this film does have the regular AIP low budge, the script is intelligent & non-sensational. The plot involves the strange mental hold that a rich & spoiled sorority college student has on her fellow sorority sisters & pledges. She causes all kinds of troubles for others thru her selfish manipulations & finally gets her comeuppance. Good acting throughout, though a scene of Susan Cabot "paddling" a sorority pledge is on the hokey side. It may be hard to see this film but it is available on VHS from Columbia Home video.
