Max Allan Collins (‘Road to Perdition’) on carrying on Mickey Spillane’s legacy

17 May 2012 4:15 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

A week before he died in 2006, author Mickey Spillane turned to his wife and said, “When I’m gone, there’s going to be a treasure hunt around here. Take everything you find and give it to Max – he’ll know what to do.”

“Max” is Max Allan Collins. He was, for a number of reasons, an ideal choice to be the keeper of the Spillane flame.

A fan of Spillane’s since he’d been a kid, Collins had met the mystery writer at a convention in the early 1980s. The connection developed into both friendship and regular collaboration. But Collins was no junior partner in the duo.

Born in Muscatine, Iowa in 1948, he’s been writing mysteries since he was a kid, eventually studying in the Iowa Writers’ Workshop at the University of Iowa, one of the most renowned writing programs in the country.

Is 'Prometheus' an 'Alien' Prequel? The Answer, Once and for All

14 May 2012 10:56 AM, PDT | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

Is director Ridley Scott's "Prometheus" is a full-on prequel to his 1979 sci-fi horror masterpiece "Alien" or not?

That's the question movie fans have been asking for months and we're going to answer it for you, once and for all. The answer, friends, is yes ... basically.

Scott has been adamant that while "Prometheus" "carries the DNA" of "Alien," it is an original piece of science fiction that delves into everything from biotechnology to artificial intelligence to the origins (and possible destruction) of mankind itself.

Those are lofty goals for a summer movie about the title spaceship star trekking to a hostile planet, but we're gonna walk you through the evidence that this is indeed an "Alien" prequel no matter how look at it. As Michael Fassbender's David says, "Big things have small beginnings."

The first thing we noticed from the movie's initial teaser trailer is the "Prometheus" logo, »

The Giant Spider Invasion – A Retrospective

24 April 2012 7:11 PM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

A 35-minute cut of The Giant Spider Invasion will be shown on Super-8 sound film at Super-8 Giant Monster Movie Madness next Tuesday, May 1st at The Way Out Club in St. Louis.

Wisconson-based regional filmmaker Bill Rebane’s no-budget wonder The Giant Spider Invasion was a hilariously cheesy 1975 throwback to the giant-monster flicks of the 50s, a trend then enjoying a revival with films like Empire Of The Ants and Food Of The Gods. This outrageous mix of giant monster motifs and backwoods sleaze plays like a hybrid of Tarantula and The Blob with its mixture of giant spiders and falling meteors. I saw The Giant Spider Invasion at the long-shuttered Ellisville Cinema in West St. Louis County (on a double bill with the David Niven vampire comedy Old Dracula). I recall the poster in the lobby which featured a gargantuan spider bearing down on a group of terrified people. »

Dick Clark Dead at 82

18 April 2012 12:22 PM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

New Year's Eve just won't seem quite the same. The iconic Dick Clark died this morning from a massive heart attack at St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica, which followed an outpatient procedure he underwent last night.

After making his mark with American Bandstand, which Clark hosted various incarnations of from 1952 to 1989, he continued to bring music into America's living rooms with New Year's Rockin' Eve. Clark hosted the show every year from 1972 to 2003 before a stroke kept him from 2004's show (Regis Philbin stepped in). Clark was back in Time's Square for 2005's ball dropping with new co-host Ryan Seacrest, and has made an appearance each year since.

In addition to an extensive producing career, Clark also appeared in several TV shows and movies, including playing himself in a 2002 episode of Just Shoot Me!, a financier in 2001's Spy Kids, and breaking from his "nice guy / America's oldest »

Diagnosis Murder's Dick Van Dyke is a roller-skating, barbershop-singing global treasure

Before we go any further, let me just explain that this blog will be longer than usual, because Diagnosis Murder is, without any trace of competition, my favourite detective show of all time, bar none, ever. I like it so much that the theme music (by the ever-excellent Dick DeBenedictis – imagine being responsible for the themes of Diagnosis Murder and Perry Mason, and not being an actual saint. Weird) is the ringtone on my phone. Even bad news sounds good when prefaced by that cheery clarinet.

I like the show so much that I am replacing my glass of water on a Diagnosis Murder coaster in between typing sentences (yes, I have four. And they were a Valentine's gift. Envy me). I like it so much that I have a signed photo over my desk of Dick Van Dyke »

Some were huge in their day, with hit records, popular movies and roles on top TV shows. But we haven’t seen them much lately — or for years. Here’s what they’ve been up to recently.

Sam Jones

The onetime Playgirl centerfold and star of Flash Gordon (1980) went on to star in 1986’s My Chauffer and the 1987-88 TV series The Highwayman. While starring roles were hard to come by, Jones occasionally appeared in minor TV and movie roles up until 2007. He is reportedly now the CEO of a security company providing protection for high-profile clients all over the world.

Charo

For those too young to know of her, think Shakira’s dance moves and Sofia Vergara’s sexy comic timing — in one person. Known for her trademark “Cuchi-Cuchi” and her frequent Love Boat and Tonight Show appearances in the ’70s and ’80s, Charo, whose full name is Maria »

'Green Lantern' Writer To Pen 'Perry Mason' for Robert Downey Jr.

20 February 2012 2:02 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Marc Guggenheim, who was one of the writers on last summer's comic book adaptation Green Lantern, is in now negotiations to write a script that would bring fictional defense lawyer Perry Mason to the big screen starring Robert Downey Jr. THR has the story, which tells us Guggenheim is working from an original story by Downey and his Team Downey production company president David Gambino set in 1930s Los Angeles. The Mason character originated that decade in novels, radio and film, but was most famously played by Raymond Burr on the B&W television show that ran from 1957 to 1966. Read on for more info. For the uninitiated, Perry Mason stories generally follow a certain formula: Mason takes on a client with an unusual case, and there's a massive courtroom showdown in which the police believe the client is guilty, but Mason provides alternate evidence to convince them of the opposite. »

20 February 2012 7:34 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Having last summer.s Green Lantern on the resume isn.t as toxic as one might assume. Marc Guggenheim, who co-wrote the superhero origin story with at least four others, is the leading contender to pen the Perry Mason reboot for Robert Downey Jr., also set up at Warner Bros., according to The Hollywood Reporter. Guggenheim.s a good fit, as he once worked as an attorney before trying his hand at producing and screenwriting. His early credits also include episodes of The Practice and Law & Order. He also has comic credits, having penned for both Marvel and DC Comics. Mason, of course, is a lawyer serving as the central character in a series of books by Erle Stanley Gardner. Though Hollywood made a number of Mason films and radio telecasts in the 1930s, the character became a household name once Raymond Burr played him on television from 1957-66. Guggenheim »

‘Green Lantern’ Writer to Pen Robert Downey Jr’s ‘Perry Mason’ Reboot

18 February 2012 8:35 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

One of innumerable franchises currently in the early stages of a reboot/remake treatment is the Perry Mason series, which really exploded in popularity when Raymond Burr portrayed the title character in a 1950s TV show version (based in part on Erle Stanley Gardner’s original novels). Robert Downey Jr. is producing the new Pm movie and reportedly intends to portray the eponymous investigative lawyer onscreen.

It makes sense then that Downey and his fellow producers would employ a lawyer-turned-screenwriter (in the form of Marc Guggenheim) to script the new Perry Mason film, which will be based on an original story about the character as co-conceived by Downey and the president of his Team Downey banner, David Gambino.

Guggenheim (as THR mentions in its scoop) practiced as an attorney in Boston before he started writing for and ...

'Green Lantern' Writer Marc Guggenheim To Pen 1930s Set 'Perry Mason' For Robert Downey Jr.

17 February 2012 1:08 PM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Like every other A-lister in Hollywood, Robert Downey Jr. has quite a few projects on the go at any given moment in time, but the one that seems to be moving along quicker than others is the big screen version of "Perry Mason." It does have franchise potential, after all. The project was first announced last fall and it continues to move forward, as a writer has now been found. Marc Guggenheim, whose movie CV boasts the dubious credits of "Green Lantern" and "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" has been tapped to take a pen to the movie. Based on the books by Erle Stanley Gardner, "Perry Mason" started on the big screen with a string of movies in the 1930s with Warren William as the famed defense attorney. But it was the long running '50s and '60s TV series starring Raymond Burr that launched "Perry Mason" into the stratosphere, »
