Surprising film self-criticism of Spanish cinema, by Rafael Gil.
24 October 2010 | by (Spain) – See all my reviews

In a centre and famous cinema of Madrid, has launched a Spanish film more and, as in recent years, "César Neira" (Francisco Rabal) does not work in it. The public and, above all, the producers seem to have forgotten about him. The radio quiz "Famous in a night" gives him the opportunity to return to speak of him...

"La gran mentira", is a self-criticism of Spanish cinema as has rarely been seen. Do not allow anyone without reproach: neither producers nor directors, nor scriptwriters, or actors, not even their representatives. It is a burden of depth against the establishment film of the time. Today probably wouldn't have been nobody capable in the Spanish cinema current of make such criticism. In the high of this healthy self- criticism, until director and writer of this film is reproach themselves. If except the predictable love story, this film has much merit.

We must highlight an excellent photography across the whole film. Some good interpretations of the actors, with abundant "cameos" of actors and celebrities cinema in those years, and a good performance of Rabal, but it is not among his best characters.
