Fangoria Comic Screams Holiday Gift List - Bad Planet

18 December 2009 4:59 AM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Bad Planet– Limited Black and White Hardcover Edition | Raw Entertainment Studios http://www.raw-studios.com/

Written by Thomas Jane and Steve Niles | Art by James Daly III, Lewis Larosa, Tim Bradstreet, and Dave Kendall

It’s Saturday. A little after 1pm, and I’m flipping through the channels like a speed demon looking for a visual sensation. After going through 100 plus channels, something occurs to me that I’m not necessarily thinking about, but more like a trigger effect from all the reality shows, fix it yourself home improvement clips, and boring news channels. The surprise on this Saturday is that I didn’t stumble upon a classic science fiction movie. Not that I watch much television on a Saturday afternoon as it is, but I know most of my childhood and teenage years, I’d flip through the channels and fall into a War Of The Worlds or It Came From Outer Space. »

James Cameron to Direct New 'Forbidden Planet'?

15 December 2009 9:20 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

For the past year or so, we’ve been reporting on the proposed Forbidden Planet movie J. Michael Straczynski has been writing. According to him, it’s not exactly a remake or prequel, but a take on the 50’s sci-fi classic no one has thought of yet. (And if you think you know exactly what Straczynski has planned, we remind you that back in March, the writer confirmed that he had to terminate his script and start over, after so much of it had been leaked on-line.)

Well, whatever his Forbidden Planet ends up being, it now appears James Cameron could be on-board in some capacity, although he doesn’t even know what form yet. "That's a project that I'm actively involved in, but I haven't made any decisions about it yet," Cameron told MTV at a junket in London. He added, "I love 'Forbidden Planet.'"

Fede Alvarez, Fx man and commercial director, brings us this wicked Sci-Fi short about the inevitable day when the giant robots finally get tired of us sticking forks in our toasters and come from The Forbidden Planet to hand us all our asses. It’s called Panic Attack and yes, seeing 200 foot Iron Giants striding purposefully out of the fog to stomp pedestrians and hurl alien firepower at our vulnerable capitols is a pulse quickening experience. It’s a must see. Thanks Quiet Earth for keeping a watch out. »

"Monsieur Verdoux" -- Starring Charlie Chaplin.  Also starring Mady Correll, Isobel Elsom, Audrey Betz, Ada May, Martha Ray.  Directed by Charlie Chaplin.  (1947, 124mins, B&W) Chaplin called this film his "cleverest and most brilliant", but he is certainly not the familiar Tramp in it.  He plays a suave serial killer who makes his living marrying and murdering lonely rich women.  Chaplin turned this shocking conceit into a black comedy that seems surprisingly modern to us today -- especially in its presentation of the hypocrisy of societies that condemn murder committed by individuals but glorify war.

A rare big screen revival.

Bob Burns’ Screaming Video

22 October 2009 2:34 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

When was the last time Halloween came five times in one month? It’s been happening this October thanks to Bob Burns, monster kid fandom’s legendary “gift that keeps on giving”—and it has only taken him 42 years to get it all together! At the Bob Burns’ Hollywood Halloween website, a two-hour-plus documentary telling the story of Bob and Kathy Burns’ live Halloween shows has been serialized; the first of the five parts became available on October 5, and the rest are being spaced throughout the month.

For newbies, a bit of backstory: In 1967, Bob and wife Kathy, ensconced in their new Burbank home, decided to do a little more for trick-or-treaters than drop candy in their bags. When kids knocked on the door, it opened to reveal a “mad lab” complete with Frankenstein’s Monster (a dummy strapped to a diagonal operating table) and crackling lab equipment. For the next several years, »

Scores from Outer Space

30 September 2009 7:38 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Undertones: Volume 6 The classic science fiction film emerged during a period of great societal paranoia in the Us in the early 1950s. The post-WW2 environment saw an increased concern with nuclear armament and a fear of the infiltration of communism on the American way of life. Essentially, the sci-fi film was Hollywood’s great metaphor for these threats; its power largely dependent on playing on the fears of the cinema-goer. Many of the films were low-budget affairs pumped out by the studios; a steady stream of high-camp and cheap thrills in order to provide what one can only assume was constant necking-fodder for teens at drive-ins. Amongst these ‘B’ pictures, many of which have been long lost in time to the more technologically-savvy audiences of recent years but considered charming nostalgia to retro film junkies, are films that stand out for their innovation and social commentary and are considered classics by modern cinophiles. »
