The Long, Hot Summer

Barns are a-burning, Paul Newman is recommended to Joanne Woodward as ‘a big stud horse’ and Lee Remick oozes sexuality all over Martin Ritt’s CinemaScope screen. William Faulkner may be the literary source, but this tale of ambition in the family of yet another southern Big Daddy is given the faux Tennessee Williams treatment — it’s a grand soap opera with a fistful of great stars having a grand time.

The Crimson Kimono

Another great Samuel Fuller film on Blu-ray — this one is a crime tale set in downtown Los Angeles’ Little Tokyo, that forms an interracial romantic triangle. It’s risky for its year because of the sexual dynamics — a Japanese-American man falls in love with a Caucasian woman. Fuller’s approach is years ahead of its time, even if Columbia’s sales job was a little weird.

Tyrone Power stars in The Eddy Duchin Story.

Tyrone Power stars as charismatic music man Eddy Duchin in the 1956 music-filled biographical drama The Eddy Duchin Story, which makes its Blu-ray debut from Twilight Time.

Directed by veteran George Sidney and shot by the great Harry Stradling, Sr. (a two-time Oscar winner for My Fair Lady and The Picture of Dorian Gray), the film tells the story of Duchin, who came out of nowhere to become one of the 1930s’ top pianists and bandleaders. Kim Novak (Pal Joey, Picnic) co-stars as the society dame who helps, loves, and marries him. Sadly, Duchin’s stratospheric success is laced with tragedy…

Bonus features on the Blu-ray include an isolated music and effects track (the score was composed by George Duning, who picked up an Oscar nomination for his work) and the film’s original

Old Hollywood Glamour at Cannes: Novak to Attend Vertigo Screening on the Croisette

Kim Novak to attend Cannes 2013 Vertigo screening Kim Novak will be in attendance at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, festival organizers have announced. Novak will be present at a Cannes Classics screening of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1958 psychological thriller Vertigo, which has been recently restored. For all it’s worth, Vertigo was the top movie at the most recent (2012) Sight & Sound decennial poll of film critics and filmmakers. (Photo: Kim Novak Vertigo.) Vertigo was also a source of controversy in early 2012, when Kim Novak took out an ad in one of the trade publications claiming she felt she had been violated ("I want to report a rape") after finding bits from Bernard Herrmann’s Vertigo music in Ludovic Bource’s eventually Oscar-winning The Artist score. Besides the Vertigo screening, Kim Novak will also be a presenter at Cannes’ closing ceremony on Sunday, May 26. According to the festival’s press release, Novak first
