Toto organizes a counterfeiting ring
25 November 2014 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"The Band of Honest Men" (1956) or "La banda degli onesti" is an excellent comedy, easily competitive with the best comic artist movies from my country. Toto is terrific and receives excellent support from his two confederates in crime, Peppino De Filippo and Giacomo Furia.

One can know the plot setup without spoiling the movie which delivers comedy constantly through inventive dialog, gestures, situations, double takes and so on. Toto is a janitor or custodian for a large apartment complex. In the opening sequence, he is called to an elevator that's stuck and inside is the new building administrator or accountant. Toto's on the roof and his wife is hanging out clothes. He blames her, which doesn't faze her a bit. He's letting off steam. She resists and he tells her she did it by telepathy! This signals the cleverness of his character's imagination. And all with a straight face, well, not really completely straight, which is part of Toto's genius, one of degree and expression, walk and gesture, movement and speech.

The administrator wants Toto to cut back on the use of coal and split the proceeds from the excess. Honest Toto refuses. Another temptation comes his way when a dying tenant turns over to him a set of genuine 10,000 lira plates and watermarked paper. Toto will dispose of them but decides to cross over to the corrupt accountant's side. Partly, because he rationalizes that any paper he will spread is really genuine. He recruits De Filippo and Furia to help him with printing and inking. The scene in which Toto ever so gradually introduces the idea to De Filippo is hilarious, as he is maximally circumspect using vague metaphors with the honest printer.

Comic complications ensue from all sides, especially as Toto's son returns as an officer of the state who in his customs work also looks for fake currency.

You can bet that I'll be looking out for other Toto movies.
