The masterful animation sequence is all that survives today
29 November 2007 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Reportedly, Irwin Allen's 1956 documentary-style movie "The Animal World" has been almost entirely lost. Out of its original length of eigthy-two minutes, all that remains, to our knowledge, is the ten-minute long segment in which Ray Harryhausen presented before us very effectively animated dinosaurs. It is also presented documentary-style, with a narrator describing the dinosaurs and how mighty and powerful they were. Special effects were nearly flawless. Not only were the dinosaurs well-animated, but the sets were absolutely perfect. The backgrounds were the most impressive parts of the animation table. It gave a feeling like these weren't just models on a table, but real live animals. The only down part of it is the not-so-convincing live-action mechanical models that are substituted in for close ups. The triceratops close-up was the least convincing. And overall, not very believable when compared to the lifelike stop-motion animation. "The Animal World" may be a lost film and to my knowledge, there are no available prints of the film in its original version. But the animation still remains to this day.
