Phil Carey again gets involved with outlaws Gene Evans and William Bishop
12 March 2015 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Unlike the other reviewers here, I found this western to be very solid, original, well-acted and above par.

"Wyoming Renegades" has a firm foundation in its story and script. The story is filled with twists. Revealing them would be a shame, so I won't, but the conflict between the outlaws and the good people takes on a number of very interesting hues and shifts. Guaranteed. The script carries this forward with mature characterizations that are not at all simple black and white. Here too we find shifts occurring.

As for the acting, it's rock solid. Gene Evans makes a terrific threatening Butch Cassidy. William Bishop is perfectly cast as the Sundance Kid; he's an underrated actor. Every line these two speak is convincing and gritty. This is no powder-puff western. Philip Carey is a man who once was with the gang, got loose and is trying to go straight, where he meets Douglas Kennedy and joins him in business. These two actors always pull their weight and liven up the screen, Carey in his more subdued way (something like Glenn Ford) and Kennedy in a more gregarious way. Carey also meets the feisty Martha Hyer who doesn't want women to be under their husbands' thumbs. Additional support comes from Hyer's dad and local banker, Don Beddoe.

Director Fred Sears knows how to keep the story and action rolling, whether it's a sci-fi flic, a noir or a western. This is no lukewarm western. It's quite a bit darker than many, and this includes one night shootout in which it's hard to know one side from the other.
