Land baron John McIntire accedes to justice of Joel McCrea
28 April 2017 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"Stranger on Horseback" (1955) has circuit court judge Joel McCrea riding into a region owned by one man: John McIntire. He's cemented his control by marriages, but he has a son (Kevin McCarthy) who's too willing to kill heartlessly knowing he has the protection of his old man. That is, until McCrea appears. McCrea represents integrity and a government of laws, not individual land barons. He must clash with McIntire, but the latter is tired of blood and even he has a conscience, knowing what his son is. Will that be enough to arrive at justice, or will there be a conclusion driven by guns? An excellent cast supports this very fine movie. I wonder whether everyone involved in such a good production knew at the time what a great product they were creating. Well, this kind of film is something any American can be proud of, because the philosophy and ideal presented are so grand: due process of law. Westerns like this have made their way across the entire world. They are may be more popular today in foreign lands than in the country where they were made.

While not at all "High Noon", it seems to echo it somewhat in the judge versus a whole town under McIntire's thumb, except for a sheriff (Emile Meyer) yearning not to be. Even the loquacious prosecutor (John Carradine) is McIntire's man. Joel McCrea is great in this kind of role. This is a joy to watch.
