According to an AP report from May, 1954, Piper Laurie was a replacement for original leading lady, Allison Hayes. No reason was given for the change, but Hayes left Universal-International about the same time.

A United Press item dated 10 June 1954, described a peculiar problem that Universal-International Studios was having filming in the Southern Utah town of Moab. Director Jerry Hooper said that he couldn't secure extras on location in a community hit by uranium fever, observing that Moab residents "would rather go out in the hot desert looking for uranium than get paid $15 a day to just stand around as extras." .
