The film bears only a passing resemblance to Scott's 1823 novel, and seems to have borrowed much more from the 12th century legend of Tristan and Isolde.
The castle shown at the start of the film is Bodiam Castle in East Sussex.
Soviet television produced an adaptation of the novel in 1988. In 1971 a series based on the Walter Scott novel was co-produced by France and West Germany.
The film was not successful at the box office.
