Storyline

A man in priestly robes, seemingly the long-awaited Father O'Shea, arrives at a little-frequented Catholic mission in 1947 China. Though the man seems curiously uncomfortable with his priestly duties, his tough tactics prove very successful in the Seven Villages, as around them China disintegrates in civil war and revolution. But he has a secret, and his friendship with mission nurse Anne (an attractive war widow) seems to be taking on an unpriestly tone... Written by Rod Crawford <puffinus@u.washington.edu>

Interesting film of Edward Dmytryk with a script of great potential.
29 March 2012 | by (Spain) – See all my reviews

China 1947. Carmody (Humphrey Bogart), an American pilot, after being shot down his plane, falls into the hands of a tyrannical warlord (Lee J. Cobb). When she manages to escape, posing as a priest and takes refuge in a small Catholic mission.

The story presents this movie is interesting but does not reach high rating because of a film script that delves surface perhaps little in the characters and situations. The film deserved to all this a little footage, it seems too short for what could have been achieved in this film. There is more than enough material to develop a script for higher quality and wider development in every sense of what is narrated. Humphrey Bogart's interpretation is correct, as the direction of Edward Dmytryk One of the primary sequences of this production, starring Lee J.Cobb is presented in original version with subtitles in English and Spahish and I suppose that is caused by the deteriorating sound Spanish original dubbing for release in Spain ago many years.

This film belongs to the first who filmed the FOX in its new widescreen Cinemascope and impact caused both inexplicably now being marketed in 1.85 widescreen with which there are continuous images side mutilations resulting in disparate frames. It so happens that at the beginning of the film with the credits at the end of it has respected the original format CINEMASCOPE to accommodate the whole picture, because in another way as it offers all the film does not can be seen in full. It's a slightly flawed film both in its filming in the year 1955 and in its current commercial form.
