Impressive, abstract dance film from Bert Haanstra

Author: lor_ from New York, New York

GOD SHIVA is an odd-man-out amongst Bert Haanstra's work, in that it is a mystical dance film, rather than his usual depiction of arts or crafts. But it is so well realized that it is worth watching, as part of the current boxed set on DVD of his film cycle.

Javanese prince and dancer Radan Mas Jodjana appears in the studio dancing as the God Shiva, with choreography by his wife Radan Ayou Jodjana. It's a brief, spellbinding performance covering the god's saving mankind, his ruling as a master of death and other topics which frankly went over my head, as I'm not a religious-minded viewer. But the beauty of Jodjana's hand movements and his precise dance steps are preserved here for all time, probably the only such example of his life's work.
