a great obscure noir
28 May 2003 | by (milford de) – See all my reviews

we all have the feeling that there's a hidden movie back there somewhere which, if turned up, will turn out to be just great -- if only we could see it...well, here it is..richard conte starred in 'the big tip off' right after new york confidential in 1955....here he plays a newspaper editor who in the same day is affected by two strange events which change his life..as a matter of fact, the movie begins with his narrative wishing things had turned out differently...and then the story begins as a flashback with his narrative continuing throughout the film...people are not who they seem, especially bruce bennett, whose voice and mannerisms are exactly like gary cooper's...there's the girl played coyishly by constance smith and the familiar detective james millican...but it's richard conte who carries the show..and speaking of shows, this movie has one of the best boogie-woogie breaks in noir...for those who have seen them all , here's one that will get you excited once again..
