Storyline

In World War II, the greatest threat to the British navy is the German battleship Tirpitz. Being anchored in a Norwegian fjord, it is impossible to attack it with any chance of success. But the navy trains a special commando to attack it, using little submarines to plant underwater explosives under it. Written by Mattias Thuresson

Trivia

The central event of this film is the x-craft attack on the battleship Tirpitz. The captain of x-craft 5 was in reality Henty Henty-Creer. Before the second world war Henty Creer was a film cameraman and worked on 49th Parallel (1941), The Thief of Bagdad (1940) and The Four Feathers (1939). See more »

Goofs

The sub machine guns have wooden stock so are definitely not Stirlings which have curved magazines also. They look more like MP28 Schmiessers (not to be confused with the falsely named MP38/40) or Erma EMP35 which would have been in second line naval service at the time. (They may have been Austrian/Swiss Steyr-Solthuthurn MP34/S1-100 or even British Lanchester MK1 which were used by the RN in the war.) See more »

A wonderful film
20 June 2004 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

This is yet another example of the fantastic films that Britain USED TO MAKE. Great acting, powerful direction and real emotion.

I saw in at the cinema a few weeks back and it really still packs a punch. I must get this one and others like the Cruel Sea on DVD.

If only we could make films like this again.

Why is it that we could make such great films 30 or 40 years back and now we have so many problems? Actually I think I know that answer to that one already.

I think that it would be interesting to remake this film but it would have to be made by a top flight director I think
