Vintage burlesque film is camp with a capitol c, 26 July 2008
Author: TheMarquisDeSuave from Worcester, MA

Its difficult to criticize this film by the standards of normal films. Its among the most artless films I've seen. "Variatease" is a film which merely exists to titillate and entertain the audience. It is essentially a filmed burlesque show, so it must be judged by the standards of a burlesque show opposed to a film. Never having been to an actual burlesque show (they went out of vogue several decades before I was even born), I really can't view how successful or not this one is.

However, being a huge fan of 1950s camp and culture, I was ridiculously entertained by this film. The girls in it are absolutely gorgeous, such as Lili St. Cyr and the legendary Bettie Page. Bettie Page can't dance at all, but she still carries that sexy mystique her classic pinups contained. Anyone who considers themselves a fan of Ms. Page need to see this film pronto.

Outside of the striptease acts, the other presentations are often hilarious in how bad they are. There's an interpretive dance number which mocks spousal abuse, a stand-up comedian who rips Henny Youngman off wholesale, a singing female comedian who makes Carrot Top look like Bill Hicks, and many other equally embarrassing performances. It all adds up to a fascinating time capsule and slice of camp. (6/10)
