Newswire: Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born remake will sing at Warner Bros.

The stars have most certainly not lost their glitter for Warner Bros. Deadline reports that the studio has officially said yes to the A Star Is Born remake starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, who will also direct. The project, which once had Clint Eastwood attached, is a long-gestating one. At multiple points in its journey, Beyoncé was reportedly sought out to lead the cast. However, since Lady Gaga’s been attempting some sort of Judy Garland cosplay for the last couple of years, it makes sense that she ultimately landed the part. She and Cooper will play the central newcomer-veteran couple embodied by Garland and James Mason in 1954 and Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson in 1976. It’s unclear just how modern Cooper’s take on the story is going to be. Our personal hope is just that Gaga’s character is named Esther, as she was in »

Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga will star in the fourth version of A Star Is Born. Cooper will also direct the movie....

Never let it be said that Hollywood doesn’t love its own mythology. The story of a romance between an ingénue and an industry veteran that sees her fortunes rise as his falls is as old as the business itself. In fact, A Star Is Born has been made three times already, telling that exact same plot. So why not a fourth for 21st century sensibilities starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga?

Indeed, Warner Bros has greenlit just such a movie, and it not only marks Gaga’s big screen debut in a leading role, but it will also be Cooper’s first time in the director’s chair. Having made the deal with Greg Silverman, president of creative development and worldwide production at Warner Bros, »

Judy by the Numbers: "The Faraway Part of Town"

3 August 2016 5:30 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

After the critical and financial disappointment of A Star Is Born (1954), Judy took another hiatus from moviemaking. While she continued an active concert touring schedule, and began popping up on television on occasion, exhaustion, disappointment and illness kept her from another film. It took an old friend to coax her back into movies, in the weirdest cameo of her career.

The Movie: Pepe (Columbia, 1960)

The Songwriters: Dory Previn (lyrics), Andre Previn (music)

The Cast: Cantinflas, Shirley Jones, Dan Dailey, directed by George Sidney

(A cleaner version with proper aspect ratios can be found here.)

The Story: Cantinflas was already a beloved megastar of Mexican cinema by the time he made a splash in Around the World in 80 Days. Hoping to capitalize on a new opportunity, Columbia cast him in Pepe, and added cameos by 35 Hollywood stars just in case the Mexican comedian didn't pan out.

Judy was one of the 35 cameos. »

Judy by the Numbers: "The Man That Got Away"

27 July 2016 7:17 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

When Judy Garland and George Cukor made A Star Is Born for Warner Bros, both Judy and the industry were changing. The Paramount Case and The De Havilland ruling had weakened the paternalistic power of the studio system by forcing studios to sell their theaters and release their stars, while widescreen technology changed the shape of the movies. Similarly, Judy's previously squeaky-clean MGM image had transformed. In the early 1950s, she divorced Vincente Minnelli, married Sidney Luft, survived a suicide attempt and rehab and launched a successful concert series and an even more successful concert album. It was no coincidence that in the middle of this maelstrom Judy Garland's comeback vehicle was a remake of a 1937 Technicolor classic.

Interview: Elle Fanning, Nicolas Winding Refn on ‘The Neon Demon’

22 June 2016 8:14 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – The contemplation of beauty gets a little more truth in a new film by Nicolas Winding Refn (“Drive”) entitled “The Neon Demon.” It features Elle Fanning as Jesse, a naive girl who wants to break into the world of modeling, and does so in an unexpected way. The symbolic film has both strange drama and touches of horror.

Director Nicholas Winding Refn has been a known cinema force since his breakthrough with “Drive” in 2011. The Danish born filmmaker began his career in his native Denmark with the film (and subsequent trilogy) “Pusher” (1996). He built his reputation film-by-film, as the John Turturro starring “Fear X” (2003) next got him noticed. The Sundance Film Festival gave praise to “Bronson” (2008), nominating the film for the Grand Jury Prize. The breakthrough film “Drive” came three years later, and garnered two Oscar nominations. “The Neon Demon” is Refn’s tenth feature film.

Stage Door: Steve Martin & Edie Brickell's "Bright Star"

6 June 2016 5:00 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

In Stage Door we talk theater, usually making some form of movie connection because that's how we do things...

I don't know anything about Bluegrass music but I wouldn't have connected it to the Melodrama form. If I tried to tell you the plot of Steve Martin's Broadway show "Bright Star," you wouldn't even believe it, so I shan't. Let's just say that if the plot were a movie it would be a silent film with wild eyed pantomiming it's so Big with oversized emotional rug-pulling. I was just crazy about the music but the book not so much. (On the night I attended it was all worth it because Steve Martin made a surprise appearance. There he was as the curtain raised for Act 2, playing on his banjo. He was loving it and so was the very very appreciative crowd. How lucky that he picked our night to show up! »

Top Movies That Launched Actors' Careers

6 June 2016 12:00 PM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

It's the role all actors dream of -- the one that puts them on the map. Breakout movie moments are born from a combination of factors, including raw talent, the movie's reception, and a little bit of showbiz luck. When the elements are all there and the sun is shining just right, an actor can go from "Hey, didn't I see her in ...?" to household-name status in no time.

These performances are examples of movies that hit the "launch" button on an actor's career. A couple of these performers may have had credits stretching back years before that defining role, but this was the one that made the entire industry and the movie-going public sit up and take notice. Read on to remember when six of the most bankable actors saw their careers take off.

‘Paramour’ Broadway Review: There’s Cirque du Soleil Gold Amid Showbiz Dross

25 May 2016 7:00 PM, PDT | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

The big surprise of Cirque du Soleil’s new show on 42nd Street is how Broadway it is. “Paramour,” which opened Wednesday at the Lyric Theatre, tells a very simple Hollywood story about a mad movie director (Jeremy Kushnier) who falls in love with his leading-lady discovery (Ruby Lewis) only to see her take off with a lowly pianist-composer (Ryan Vona). In comparison, “A Star Is Born” and “42nd Street” are Dostoevsky. Where do all the standard Cirque du Soleil acrobats and aerialists fit into such a conventional musical? Philippe Decoufle’s direction tries a number of ways. For the female lead’s first. »

Being Reborn as a 16-Year-Old Girl: Nicholas Winding Refn on His Vampiric Assault on the Beauty Industry, The Neon Demon

19 May 2016 3:00 PM, PDT | Filmmaker Magazine - Blog | See recent Filmmaker Magazine news »

Nicholas Winding Refn’s new The Neon Demon, premiering in Competition at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, is a nightmarish, outlandish fashion-world riff on A Star is Born in which vampiric models struggling to remain alluring in a swipe-to-the-next-one culture provide a ready-made metaphor for beauty industry soul-sucking. Elle Fanning is Jesse — blonde, beautiful, 16, and something of an empty vessel waiting to be anointed the next “It Girl.” Her journey through Angeleno nightclubs, booking agencies and photography studios is one of ribald psychological horror, as physical spaces twist and expand, friends become alien, and even her scuzzy, entirely unfashionable […] »
