advertisement
  • Two versions of the film are available on video.
    • One version is missing the scene where Livia tries to explain where all the money meant for the troops went.
    • Another version is missing a the climatic battle sequence between the Austrian and Italian troops.

  • An alternate English version was released with the title "The Wanton Contessa" and features dialogue rewritten by Tennesee Williams and Paul Bowles.

  • At the end of Robert Osborne's TCM introduction to the film (June 2005) he states: "By the way, what we're about to see is Visconti's original version of this film, not the abbreviated English-language version that originally played in America - so this is a big treat."
